10 Summer Beauty Tips and Products!

Get summer ready with these tried and true products and tips!

Hair

Keep ends from frying and your scalp from burning (ouch) with this double duty leave-in conditioner! NIOS Shield contains Argan oil and vitamins to keep your locks silky smooth and as a bonus 15 SPF! If you have ever burned your head in your part (I have), trust me it hurts! It hurts to wash your hair and then when your scalp peels, you look like you have giant dandruff flakes! No Bueno. In addition to NIOS Shield, try evo icon welder hot tool shaper (review here), Paul Mitchell Sun Shield Conditioning Spray or L’Oréal EverPure UV Protect Spray.

Nothing dulls and damages your hair like the sun, sea and chlorine. I pay waaay too much for this blonde to rinse it down the drain. Keep your color bright, repair and strengthen hair with evo mane prescription protein treatment. I saw improvement in my split ends in just one treatment. For realz. I absolutely LOVE this and highly recommend it!

For those of you with fine hair like mine, swimming tangles your hair like a bird building its nest. The Body Comb detangles hair while preventing breakage. The patented tooth design is great for any type hair.

Body

Get a close shave on legs and bikini line. I love Whish shave cream and Hair Inhibiting Gel, they really, really work! I can go up to two weeks without shaving when I use these two products together, others have gone three weeks! They come is awesome scents too, I like the coconut. A good drugstore option is the Schick Intuition Pure Nourishment Razor. This inventive razor lathers, moisturizes and shaves in one. The coconut milk and almond oil is amazeballs!

Exfoliate! Before you slather on sunscreen, make sure you have done a good job of exfoliating those dry, ashy legs. A good body scrub is essential to sloughing off dry winter skin. There are tons on the market in every price range. My current favorite is the Bamboo Lemongrass Foaming Body Scrub from Lather.  One of my exfoliating secrets is the Seaweed Soap from Reviva Labs. It has seaweed in it to scrub AND moisture. After the rinsing the scrubbys, you are left with a layer of hydration and it smells heavenly. PLUS it sells for about $4 a bar at Whole Foods, some Ulta stores and tons of other health food stores. Tip: shaving your legs is enough exfoliation for that day—don’t try a scrub after shaving, it’s too much.

You don’t have to live with lizard legs, use body oils instead! I love using body oils in the summer to keep limbs looking and feeling soft and smooth. Apply a few drops when skin is still damp right out of the shower. You can go all out and buy beautifully scented oils like Nuit or just grab some coconut oil at the health food store. Coconut oil is deeply hydrating, and helps calm dry, itchy skin. I love the scent of coconut oil anyway! Argan oil is fantastic for many things and is easily found. The Vitamin E in it helps heal dry skin. Tip: find all kinds of great oils at your local health food store or whole foods!

Face

Make use of waterproof makeup, just don’t go for a full face of it, especially at the beach or pool. You don’t want to look like a Real Housewife do you? Of course you don’t. Unlike the Real Housewives, I like getting in the pool, lake or ocean to cool off. For me, I forgo any foundation and use sunscreen instead, use a pretty waterproof eyeliner, waterproof mascara and a touch of clear gloss. Stick a fork in me, I’m done. Available in fun shades like turquoise, hot pink and lemon, Ardency Inn eyeliners are bulletproof yet are still soft and easy to apply. No worries if bright-as-the-sun shades aren’t your thang, you’ll still find basic brown, black and blue too. Tip: for waterproof mascara, just pick a good drugstore brand and you should be fine.

Don’t let your makeup slide off your face this summer! Switch to a BB cream instead. Most are lightweight, have multiple skincare benefits and give just enough coverage to look fresh and dewy. There are BB and CC creams at every price point. Some of our favorites are: Lumene Bright Now Vitamin C BB Cream, IT Cosmetics CC Cream with 50 SPF (reviewed here), bareMinerals Complexion Rescue (reviewed here) and Olay Fresh Effects. Tip: use a a good duo fiber brush to apply BB and CC creams for a flawless finish. I love the bareMinerals Smoothing Face Brush.

Whether it be designer or drugstore sunglasses, your eyes need protection from the harsh sun and glare off the water. Sunglasses also prevent us from squinting and adding to those awful crow’s feet. Tip: make sure the lenses are polarized to provide the most protection, especially if around water..

Feet:

Get sandal ready with the Amopi Pedi-Perfect Pedicure Tool. This thing could make Sasquatch into a foot model! It shaves your callused, cracked dry feet into dust. I like to go barefoot in the summer so I use it once a week. Tip: slather on Aquaphor and sleep in cotton socks for feet as smooth as buttah!

You thought I forgot sunscreen didn’t you? We’ll address that in another post!

  8. Yes! Always scrub before shave. Makes a huge diff. A primer under my CC cream helps to melt proof my face in the AZ heat. Even my dried out old hag face will slide, after a certain temp! lol I like a good pedi tool, the Emjoy one is good. 😀

  13. Great post and products. I’ve only used the Whish and BareMinerals so I need to make a list of what else to try from here.

  14. Everyone keeps talking about the Amopi Pedicure Tool, I should really get my hands on it!

  15. I’ve never had sunburn on my scalp before, but I can’t imagine it’s fun! Believe me, even with you have thick hair, chlorine and even ocean water can tangle it up like nobody’s business. Conditioner before and after is a must! And, don’t shave right before getting into the water! It leaves the skin vulnerable to infection, and can sting, too!

  16. My Amope has really been getting use as I get my feet ready for summer!
