HBO’s New Series Divorce On October 9th!

Sarah Jessica Parker returns to HBO in the new comedy series, DIVORCE. Parker stars as Frances, a woman who suddenly begins to reassess her life and her marriage, and finds that making a clean break and a fresh start is harder than she thought. Wow, can I relate! I distinctly remember when I first realized my ex-husband had checked out. We… well I,  was talking in the kitchen. I had an opportunity to apply for another position with my company and was debating whether I should list my current boss as a reference. I wanted his opinion and was listing the pros and cons, when I turned to him and asked him what he thought, he said “are we out of paper towels?” Yep, he hadn’t heard a word I said. Then there was the time I slipped on the stairs carrying a full basket of laundry. I had wrenched my ankle and was lying on the stairs immobile when he calmly took his clean underwear from the basket and left. Looking back seven years later, it seems quite comical but it wasn’t at the time. These are the types of issues Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church are dealing with on DIVORCE. Like when they take to greeting each other in the hall by flipping each other off. Or one accuses the other of not knowing the Tooth Fairy’s name. However, divorce is also scary.

The show follows Frances and Robert as they grapple with the fallout from their failing marriage, not just for themselves, but also for their children and friends, ranging from awkward public encounters to difficult private therapy sessions. Been there, done that and I didn’t even get a tee-shirt. After 15 years of marriage, I was terrified to be on my own and I honestly didn’t know if I could do it. What I did know is that I would NOT put up with a cheating husband. So when he came home after spending the weekend with his girlfriend I told him to pack up and get out. I hadn’t intended to, the words just came out of my mouth–I don’t remember thinking them, they just flew. Once they were spoken though, I knew it was the right thing to do. It was only later that I panicked. How was I going to survive on my salary and with a kid in college? Where would I live? My retirement plans had gone poof in a second–I pictured myself as an old woman living in a cave with the local vermin. I didn’t have any answers and I was scared.

Living alone was a HUGE adjustment. Even though my daughter was in college, she was only 2 hours away and had come home almost every weekend of her freshman year. Now as a sophomore, she had joined a sorority and I knew I wouldn’t see much of her. I went from having a family to being totally alone. I needed something to fill up the lonely hours. Money was an issue too. We went through a temporary support hearing with a judge and he ruled that if I was to stay in my home, I would be responsible for the mortgage and all the expenses that go along with it even though my husband earned three times what I did. I had a full time job but it didn’t pay enough, so I decided getting a second job would solve both of my immediate problems, I would have some extra money to pay the bills and something to do.  I got a part-time job at a cute little makeup store in the mall. Though working a second job was tiring, it gave me the extra income I needed and filled the time. It was fun giving women my age makeovers and making them feel beautiful. Unfortunately, after about six months I was laid off due to lack of business. The store wasn’t bringing in enough revenue to sustain the high rent the location demanded. Since I was the last employee hired, I was laid off–on my birthday! After that I moved into a cheap apartment. I still had my full- time job but I wanted something to pass the time in my off hours. I enjoyed my makeup job so much I started visiting an online forum. The more I was on the forum, the more I realized that there was no voice for women over 40. Women in their 20s and 30s dominated the boards with precious little information for older women. Combining my experience at the makeup store with my age and having done some regional modeling I decided to create a beauty blog specifically for women over 40. That’s how Prime Beauty was started. It not only was a creative outlet for me, but more importantly something all my own. In a divorce, everything is split up–this was something that I created myself that was all mine and no one could take it away from me. Little did I know then that my hobby would soon become a business. Now the blog is my business and I work part-time just for fun. How’s that for a switch- up?

Divorce is hard, it’s gut-wrenching, it’s crazy, it’s hurtful and yet there can be a positive side. I never would have found my passion had I not been searching for something to occupy my time. Since my divorce in 2009, I have created my own business, bought a new home, traveled and become a totally independent woman.  I do what I want, when I want and only answer to myself. I love my life. I have friends and family that I love and they love me back. I am doing what I love to do and am financially independent. I truly feel as if I’ve found my authentic self. Friends of mine say I’ve flourished after the divorce but that’s not true. I just tried to make the best of a bad situation and I’m proud I was able to accomplish that. I know I’m going to love the HBO series DIVORCE. It depicts every side of divorce from the tragic to the bittersweet and even the funny. I’ve seen a few clips and the acting is incredible, just what you would expect from these seasoned actors. I can’t wait for the HBO debut on October 9th.
