Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette: Review, Pics & Swatches

Gwen 2

Purchased by me

When Urban Decay released the limited edition Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette ($58) I didn’t pay a lot of attention because I was envisioning the old No Doubt 1980’s Gwen, not the chic, classy, sophisticated new Gwen. I admit I was never much of a Gwen Stefani fan until she joined the cast of The Voice. Now I can’t wait to watch every week to see her fashion, hair and makeup.  I never, ever thought I would consider Gwen Stefani a style icon! She also provides really good advice and is extremely encouraging and gracious to the contestants–she always has something nice to say and she has an endearing humble attitude.

I waited to purchase this palette because I need another neutral eyeshadow palette like I need a third boob. Although I’m a neutral girl, even I can tire of just neutrals. That’s what sold me on this palette; it includes a few bright, jewel tones to pump up the volume making it perfect for those of us who like our neutrals with a kick. Boom! Here is a palette perfect for us over 40 beauties!

Gwen Stefani, Urban Decay co-founder Wende Zomnir and her product development team created the palette after spending countless hours at Gwen’s house, talking makeup and working closely with her on every detail. The eye shadows were carefully created by Gwen as the exact shades she always wished she had in her collection. The palette features her 15 must-have shades of eye shadow, including 12 never-seen-before colors and three that are from the Urban Decay shadow collection—Blackout, Skimp and Stark.

Gwen even helped design the case which was inspired by her love of black and white graphic prints and antique gold accents. She also handpicked most of the shade names, which were inspired by her songs. There’s even a nod to the No Doubt song “Magic’s in the Makeup” written on the palette’s huge mirror and a Gwen Stefani nameplate on the cover. The palette is über thick and sturdy which is great but may make it clunky to travel with. No brush is included.

Shades include:

  • Blonde (pale beige/pink iridescent shift)
  • Bathwater (pale beige with gold pearl)
  • Skimp (pale nude satin)
  • Steady (medium rose/metallic gold shift)
  • Punk (reddish brown matte)
  • Baby (cool metallic rose)–a fav!
  • Anaheim (light taupe-brown matte)–so smooth!
  • Stark (nude-pink matte)
  • Zone (medium brown matte)
  • Serious (smoky gray with iridescent floating pearl)
  • Pop (pale coral with iridescent sparkle)
  • Harajuku (metallic blue-pink/iridescent micro-shimmer)

  • 1987 (bright metallic yellow-gold)
  • Blackout (blackest black matte)

First Row: Blonde is a frosty ivory with a slight pink undertone great for the brow bone. Bathwater is a shimmery pale yellow gold, Skimp is a nude satin with a lovely creamy texture, Steady is a rose gold with a metallic finish, Punk is a matte medium plummy brown.

Second Row: Baby is a metallic rose/pale copper–one of the best in the palette, Anaheim is matte fawn brown with grey undertones and my birthplace so I have to like it! Stark is a matte, pinky nude beige, Zone is a medium brown matte a tad darker than Anaheim and Serious is a greige (grey/brown) with subtle sparkle.

2015-12-25 23.34.37 (480x387)

Bottom Row: Pop is a warm shimmery pale peachy/beige (my jam), Harajuku is a cool bright frosty pink which I probably will never wear, Danger is a metallic royal blue and it stunning! I will definitely wear this as a liner and maybe even in the crease,  1987 is a shimmery bright yellow gold and Blackout is a matte deep black.

2015-12-25 23.37.12 (480x379)

Most of the shadows are warm toned, all with a mix of fabulous finishes. The palette is a mix of matte, satin, shimmer and metallic shades, all incredibly buttery and smooth. Though Gwen Stefani’s image may be colorful and loud, her signature makeup look is fairly basic: bare eyes, winged liner and red lips, a la Marilyn Monroe so a mostly nude palette makes sense.

PRO’s

2015-12-25 23.22.30 (480x273)

For this look I used Blonde on the brow bone, Baby on the lid and Zone in the crease. I lined the upper lash line with Punk and the lower lash line with Danger.

This is Bathwater on the brow bone, 1987 on the lid, Punk in the crease and Serious as liner on top and bottom lash lines.

By the way, if you want the perfect brush to use eyeshadow as liner, I suggest Make Up For Ever #258 Straight.

Bottom Line: This is perfect for us over 40 gals who no longer want to wear crazy, loud makeup. The palette definitely lends itself to a more quiet, elegant look with a few pops of color for fun. The Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette is ideal for over girls!

Gwen also has a lipstick line with Urban Decay coming in Spring 2016!
