Color Preserving Shampoos

If you color or highlight your hair,  you probably spend a LOT of money to keep it looking bright and natural. No matter if you color your hair yourself or get it done at a salon, the color starts to fade after a few weeks. I get my hair highlighted professionally but can only afford to do that a few times a year so using hair color preserving products is both practical and affordable for me. I’ve tried many but these are the products I’ve found that work the best for keeping your color longer. We over 40 girls need to keep those gray’s away, am I right?
1395960098_00730870200506#1 Frederic Fekkai Technician Color Care Luxe Color Masque ($20)- using this masque once a week will help protect color against fading and dullness plus condition dry locks. The first time I used this mask my sister actually asked me if I had just had my hair colored. Yay!
1395959947_220#2 Mark Hill It’s All About The Colour Shampoo ($9.99)- available exclusively at Walgreen’s, this shampoo has tons of rich, creamy lather, brightens up dull color PLUS imparts tons of shine! An excellent drugstore choice. Conditioner available too. Read about my experience with Mark Hill at BlogHer last year!
1395959849_aac-049_1z#3 Nexxus Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Shampoo ($12) – this shampoo is sulfate free and keeps hair highly moisturized. The smell is amazing! It makes my color last longer and super, super soft! Conditioner, Pre-Wash and Glossing spray available too.
#4 Fredric Fekkai Color Technician Color Care Shampoo ($20)  “Water can be the enemy of color treated hair because its impurities can turn color dull. Technician Color Care Shampoo helps prevent the appearance of fade.” – Frédéric Fekkai  This shampoo smells delicious and leaves my hair soft and shiny.

#5 Marco Color Health Shampoo with Collagen Color Guard ($27) – Marco Pelusi is a new brand for me and I thank Jennifer from My Beauty Bunny for introducing me to the line. What makes these products different is the marco™ collagen color guard™ haircare system, the first and only complete collagen-based system developed for color and chemically treated hair. Ingredients include:

  • rich in rosemary essential oils to stimulate cell growth, soothe the scalp and offer anti-aging properties
  • clove essential oils offer therapeutic and medicinal benefits including an antiseptic and astringent; also help enhance and elevate mood
  • peppermint essential oils refresh and invigorate

My color is vibrant and my hair conditioned! In addition to the color health line, Marco Pelusi has several products available including anti-frizz, hydrating and bodifying. Check out Marco Pelusi here.

Do you have colored hair? What do you use to keep your color looking fresh? I’d love to hear from you!

  1. My color-treated hair is red, so it fades even faster than other shades. I adored Sebastian’s shampoo for single-tone color-treated hair, but it was discontinued about a year ago and was supposed to be reformulated and relaunched but hasn’t been. Since then, I’ve been searching without finding “the one”. I am using Wella’s Brilliant Shine since that’s the brand of color Sassoon uses these days. I like it but don’t love it. My beef with color-treated shampoos is they leave my hair feeling “coated” rather than clean. Which of your recommended shampoos leaves your hair feeling the cleanest? Thanks, Cindy!

    • I would say the Marco Pelusi and my hair is really soft with this shampoo too! Their leave-in conditioner is awesome too!

  2. Ohhhh I wanna try the Marco Pelusi! Love the idea of collagen.

  3. I’m using a Marco leave in conditioner right now that I love!

  4. I pay a lot of money to have my hair colored so a good shampoo to help preserve that is absolutely necessary — I’ll definitely be giving some of these a try — especially the leave in conditioner!

  5. Nice recommendations, some of my favorites are Aveeno Sulfate Free, Marc Anthony Sulfate Free, and L’oreal EverCreme Sulfate Free.

  6. Thank you for this post!! I appreciate it! I am always in search a supremely good sulfate free shampoo for colored hair! (Red … that says it all 😉 )
