Spring is FINALLY arriving where I live, and it’s time to change up my fragrance from bold, dark winter scents to  fresh, sweet and lively spring scents. I attended a fragrance event at Nordstrom recently and got a chance to try a lot of new fragrances– here are a few of my favorites. There are some holidays that lend them themselves to gifting fragrance and I think Mother’s Day is one of them. Please don’t give your mother a fishing pole or a blender–spoil her and her feel beautiful with fragrance!

Philosophy Limited Edition Summer Grace ($40)– A casual, sunny scent– to my nose Summer Grace takes the best of my all time favorite feminine scent Amazing Grace and adds some spice. It’s described as a warm sunny floral but I think it has more spice than that. The sillage and lasting powder of Summer Grace is heads above the other Grace fragrances which is a good thing. Summer Grace is limited edition and I have no idea how long it will be around, so grab it while you can. There are some lovely sets available that are ideal for Mother’s Day on philosophy.com and sephora.com. Click the button in the top right sidebar for 15% off a $65 purchase thru 4/26.

Cartier de Lune ($75) –de Lune means moonlight in French and that was the image Cartier’s perfumer imagined when creating this fragrance–the moonlight hitting a field of flowers. The notes are: Pink Peppercorn, Juniper Berry, Honeysuckle, Wild Rose, Cyclamen, Morning Glory, Lily Of The Valley, Musk, Woods. This is a light, white floral that says elegant and feminine.  My friend Pink Sith and I have similar tastes in fragrance and she wrote an excellent review of Cartier de Lune in her normal verbose style. It is available for purchase from the Cartier on line boutique, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Sephora, or Nordstrom.

CLEAN Cotton T-Shirt Eau de Parfum– CLEAN is a beauty brand known for it’s crisp, unpretentious fragrances and bath and body products. Those of you who enjoy clean, fresh and laundry scents will like Cotton T-Shirt, the scent is inspired by a freshly laundered tee. Bergamot fresh laundry accord gives it a crisp feel, cotton flower and freesia notes evoke simplicity, and traces of rosewood, warm mush and sheet amber give it a warmth. CLEAN says it captures the feel of stealing and wearing your boyfriend’s tee shirt but that is definitely not the case for me. If I wore my boyfriends t-shirt, it would have come straight out of the dirty hamper after passing what he calls the ‘sniff test’ and would smell of sweat, sawdust (he does woodworking), that awful cheap Stetson cologne, and hairspray (to keep the 5 hairs he has left in place). No thank you, I much prefer CLEAN’s version. Cotton T-Shirt comes in 60ml/2.14 fl.oz. for $69 and 30ml/1 fl.oz. for $38 and is available at Sephora, Ulta and cleanperfume.com

CLEAN  Limited Edition Summer Escape– inspired by an escape to the shore, sun-kissed skin, the cloudless sky and endless sea, Summer Escape envelops the body in layers of crisp, citrusy notes.

Top notes: crisp bergamot, beach grass, mandarin orange

Mid notes: water lily, summer peony, beach honeysuckle, orange flower

Base notes: cotton blossom, white sand accord, coconut water

I like Summer Escape better than Cotton T-Shirt. It is playful, young and does remind me of my childhood days at the beach–although the sand and coconut could be stronger for me. The sillage and lasting power are impressive without being overdone or cloying. It has just the right amount of citrus to smell fresh and sparkling. I’ve been wearing this everyday since I got it–it’s ideal for spring and summer. Comes in EDP 60ml/2.14 fl. oz for $49 and is available at Sephora, Ulta and cleanperfume.com

Acqua de Gioia by Giorgio Armani – is not a new fragrance–it was introduced in 2010, but it is new to me. The sales associate at the Nordstrom Fragrance Event has me at ‘mojito’ one of my favorite cocktails. Armani was inspired by water, the feminine form, the sea, nature and his stays at the islands of Pantelleria and Antigua where he owns two holidays homes. Lucky man!

Notes are: Mint, Brown Sugar, Lemon, Jasmine, Peony, Pink Pepper, Cedar Wood, Labdanum.  The top notes of mint and lemon are first to arrive and them I catch the smell of the florals–when the juice settles down a bit the warmth comes in faintly. However, kep in mind that my nose is very unsophisticated.  Although I enjoy Acqua di Gioia, it seems a little commercial to me for being an Armani scent–like you could find it at a drugstore rather than a perfume counter. It is very light and fresh and therefore not long lasting, something I have trouble getting on board with. I know many brands encourage you to layer fragrance, but I still believe a perfume should be able to stand in its own.

The bottle baffles me. To my eye it seems very masculine and boring in design. It is supposed the mimic a water drop combined with the form of a woman–uh, okay. The model in the ad is a little scary–as in she looks like a creature–maybe she is suppose to resemble a sea creature? I think she just looks mad as if you interrupted her doing something important–that or she’s going to turn into an animal soon.  If you like light, happy and citrusy scents, Acqua di Gioia will satisify you. From $39.50-80.00. Available at Nordstrom, Ulta and where fine fragrances are sold.

Poppy by Coach–  I know some of you will make fun of me for this choice because it is decidedly marketed toward teenagers, but it I like too! Does that mean I’m immature? Absolutely! Poppy is airy,  playful, and bright–it even sounds child-like doesn’t it? Introduced it the fall of 2010, I always thought Poppy was better suited to spring and summer, especially with opening notes of
fresh cucumber, sunny mandarin and delicate freesia buds.  The heart of the fragrance is filled with the classy aroma of jasmine, a hint of pink water lily, red candied rose petals, southern gardenia, and finalized with a crème brûlée accord. The base notes add a charm of cedar wood, sandalwood, vanilla and deliciousmarshmallow. If you like sweet, playful scents, make sure to check out Poppy. It is available in eau de parfum, body lotion and a purse spray. Eau de Parfum 1.7 fl. oz. $60 and 3.4 fl.oz. $80 as well as gift sets. Nordstrom, Ulta and where fine fragrances are found.
