Add Moisture & Color with Burt’s Bees Lipsticks

Burt's Bees Lipsticks

Though the matte lip is all the rage, I still haven’t jumped on the bandwagon. I don’t really understand the appeal of wearing a lip product that feels uncomfortable or drying on the lips. Give me gloss. Give me satin. Give me a moisturizing lip product any day.

As a huge fan of Burt’s Bees, I was excited to discover, late last year, they were coming out with Burt’s Bees Lipsticks, $9.00. Could it be possible for these new lipsticks to combine the moisturizing properties of my favorite lip balm with the pigmentation of a traditional lipstick?

Even though I was intrigued by the honeycomb packaging, I hesitated to try out this new lip product. (Remember, I am on a lip product buying hiatus.) When 510 Iced Iris, 520 Scarlet Soaked, and 532 Russet River showed up at my doorstep, I took it as I sign that Burt wanted me to give them a try.

Burt's Bees Lipsticks

According to, all 14 shades of the lipsticks are made from 100% natural ingredients, including Beeswax, Moringa Oil, Raspberry Seed Oil, and Vitamin E. They also promise to:

  • Deliver 8-hours of moisture
  • Not dry out lips
  • Help hydrate and moisturize lips leaving them feeling soft and smooth
  • Have a smooth, satin finish
  • Deliver bold, luscious color

Burt’s Bees Lipstick Performance

After trying out these lipsticks I was curious to know what others had to say. I was surprised by the difference in our experiences. The one thing we all did have in common was a dislike for the packaging. Although I love that it’s made from recycled plastic and PCR content, the packaging feels very flimsy. I keep waiting for it to break, especially the tube holding the actual lipstick. It doesn’t take much pressure to squeeze or flatten the tubing.

While the lipsticks do live up to their promise of delivering luscious color and a satin finish, I wouldn’t say they apply smoothly. They go on patchy, sink into lines on the lips, and stick to dry spots. They also tend to rub off in the center of lip after eating, drinking, or normal wear.

Burt's Bees Swatches

Although the formula is very lightweight, it’s not as moisturizing as I would have liked. I found myself sometimes needing to apply a lip balm to make my lips feel more hydrated. However, my lips did feel softer and smoother to the touch after wearing each shade, which means the ingredients are working some kind of magic.

Overall: The Burt’s Bees Lipsticks were a fail for me. They didn’t live up to my expectations or to the usual quality I’ve come to expect from the brand. If you haven’t tried these lipsticks before, I would recommend passing them up and opting for other products in the line, like their lip balms, shines or crayons.

Thanks for the honest review! I had been looking at these lipsticks too. Matte lipsticks dry my lips too much and lip glosses are way too sticky. I have a couple of Ulta brand lip crayons (as well as regular lipsticks from different brands) that I am using. But open to other suggestions

  2. Loved reading this honest review. While the shades look pretty on you, too bad the formula was a let-down.

  3. I liked them better than you do. I actually keep one in my purse since it’s an easy color to apply. I’ve already forgotten the name of course. My lipstick never lasts long since I bite my lips so the longevity doesn’t bother me.

  4. Maybe they have some work to do on their lipsticks. I buy their lip balm regularly though!

  5. That’s really disappointing. I’ve been eyeing these lippies for some time now but I haven’t had the chance to purchase them yet, good thing you released a review before I did.

  6. I love Burts Bees. I don’t expect the lipsticks to have the same properties as a balm, so I might give these a go anyway. I appreciate your words of advice though!

  7. Roxanne Ferber says

I love the Burt’s Bees tinted lip balms, but have never tried their lipsticks. I’m sad they didn’t work for you. That iced iris is gorgeous!

  8. These lipsticks are so beautiful! I love the look of Scarlet Soaked.

  9. Nikki Wayne says

I want the iced iris, I haven’t tried a shade like that before. Sounds like a great product.

  10. Katie Smith says

I love burts bees. I got one in a walmart box and I am in love with it. The colors all look really good on you.

  11. Nicole Cochingco Escat says

I wish I have all of these! I love collecting different lippies like yours.

  12. Wendy Polisi says

That is too bad they didn’t work out. The colors look so great in the tube, I’m surprised how light they are on.

  13. Christine Cox says

I love ANYTHING Burt’s Bees. If it says Burt’s Bees, you better believe I am buying it, but I am disappointed that these didn’t work for you. The colors look good on in your pics!

  14. I love Burt’s Bees! I didn’t even know they had these kind of products. It’s to bad they didn’t work for you though. They are some nice colors though.

  15. Kimberly Stroh says

Love this brand! I like the Russet River!

  16. jillconyers says

I love Burt’s Bees. How did I not know they have lipstick? I wonder if they have them at Target.

  17. Aziel Morte says

Looks like a great lipstick and I love the color, I wish I could have these

  18. Karen Yannacio Morse says

Burts Bees is one of my fave brands and always use for moisturizing my lips. I need to try out their lipsticks! That seems like a win-win!

  19. Good feedback. I usually LOVE every Burt’s Bees product! I haven’t tried this lipstick yet, but I do love their lip glosses. Maybe I’ll skip it and opt for their balms and glosses.

  20. Burt’s Bees has always done a great job of keeping my lips hydrated. I would love to try these and also add a little color to them.

  21. Amber Nelson says

Burt’s Bees is my favorite. I love the packaging on this one. I can’t wait to try this.

  22. That sucks that you didn’t like them. I always hate when I try a new product and it’s a fail.

I love matte lips. It’s really the only thing I wear. My fave matte lip products are by Nyx and Revlon.

  23. I have really enjoyed Burt’s Bees products in the past, so it’s sad to hear that these were not up to snuff. Burt’s Bees isn’t talking about this much, but they got bought by the Clorox company about 8 years ago. I think it’s been great for distribution, but I wonder if it’s impacting the product at this point? 🙁

  24. Honestly the Burt’s Bees Lipsticks are so new for me, but I am loving it right away for that gorgeous package and I love that they have 14 shades to try out. Beauty products that are 100% natural are always my first choice and I am going to try this one!

  25. Rachel Catherine says

That’s disappointing that you didn’t like them. It’s also not good that the packaging feels so flimsy.

  26. Becca Wilson says

I am so sorry that your final thought was that they were a fail. I love Burt’s Bees as an overall brand and so that saddens me. I don’t really wear lipstick so I won’t be getting this anytime soon, but glad that you were open and honest.

  27. Wow thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, sorry they weren’t what you expected. I almost bought two the other day but left them because I want really feeling the packaging but I have used other Burt’s Bee products and they are pretty good.

  28. I love burt bees and I heard of their new lipstick line. I am a matte lippy girl I cant lie but I love the moisture and pigments in these lipstick shades!

  29. Erin Kennedy says

I have to disagree with you. I have these lipsticks and they are far and away my new fave lipsticks. They are so moisturizing and I love mixing and matching them.

  30. It’s my first time to hear about Burt’s Bees Lipstick. I didn’t even know they have lipsticks but I am sure it’s mositurizing.
