BECCA Mineral SPF Primer Does Double Duty

BECCA has done it again–created a perfect product. It took all of one week for the BECCA Mineral SPF 30 Primer ($42) to reach HG (Holy Grail) status for me. It’s everything I want in a primer:

  • hydrating
  • 100% natural mineral UV barrier provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection
  • SPF of 30
  • oil-free
  • 100% mineral active ingredient (micronised Zinc Oxide)
  • makes makeup last all day
  • dual purpose–sunscreen and primer

This primer is lightweight–most I’ve tried with an SPF this high are thick, feel heavy on my skin and leave a white sunscreen cast. BECCA Mineral Primer doesn’t have any of those problems. It’s very moisturizing and really grabs your foundation. I’ve tried it with various foundations and it enhances every one and makes them last all day, especially in the heat. I can use it with powder or liquid foundation and it doesn’t ball up underneath which is a pet peeve of mine. A bonus is that the sunscreen in this primer is made from minerals not chemicals which many people are allergic to. BECCA Cosmetics are made in Australia and they state that this primer/sunscreen is 17% Zinc Oxide and suitable for the beach. Australian sunscreen regulations are very stringent so I believe them. While I haven’t worn this to the beach, I have sat outside in the sun with the sunscreen/primer on and have not been burned or developed any sun spots which I can’t say for moisturizers I’ve worn with sunscreen. This stuff really works!

The consistency is somewhere between a cream and a lotion, maybe thicker than your normal primer due to the sunscreen. That being said, I don’t find it as thick as most sunscreens and it’s not greasy like most either. It actually has a silky feel but not slippery like a primer with heavy silicones. I recommend waiting a few minutes to apply foundation to let it dry and set a bit. If you have very dry skin, you’ll want to use an additional moisturizer underneath; some people find it drying. I have combination skin which borders on oily in the summer so it’s not a problem for me. In fact, this keeps me quite matte throughout the day which I like.

Formulated with a cocktail of anti-oxidant vitamins including A, E, Green Tea, White Tea, Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate), Linoic Acid (Evening Primrose Oil), Alpha Lipoic Acid, Co Enzyme Q10, it seems to calm the redness I have around my nose. My makeup lasts forever with this primer! Normally by the end of the day– sometimes midday, my foundation is gone from my nose and chin, but BECCA’s Mineral Primer makes it last for a good 12 hours.

Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide 17% w/w (Purpose: Sunscreen)

Inactive Ingredients: Aqua (Water – purified), Cyclomethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glyceryl Distearate, Ceteareth-20 (Cetomacrogol 1000), PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben (Methyl Hydroxybenzoate), Tocopheryl acetate (D-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate), Parfum (Fragrance), Carbomer (Carbomer 940), Camellia Sinensis Extract (Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract), Oenothera Biennis Oil (Evening Primrose Oil), Sodium Hyaluronate, Propylparaben (Propyl Hydroxybenzoate), Ubiquinone 10 (Ubidecarenone)

Bottom Line: Honestly, this primer/sunscreen is my dream come true. A primer that smooths out my lines, makes my makeup last all day, has an effective mineral sunscreen, doesn’t dry out my skin and leaves a nice matte finish–what more could I ask for? It is fragranced so if smells bother you you might want to skip this it, but I honestly thought the scent vanished very quickly. Like I mentioned before, if you have very dry skin, your will need an extra moisturizer. As for me, I’ve found my HG primer!

  1. Wow….this sounds fantastic for summers! It’s hard to find a primer with mineral sunscreen.

  2. I like this primer a lot too esp with the SPF in it.

  3. I wish this was on Sephora but I bet Dermstore carries it. You make it sound perfect.

    • Marcia, I wore this every day were in LA and my makeup never melted, it doesn’t feel heavy, leaves no white cast–It’s my new HG

  4. I was excited right down to the part where you said it’s fragranced :(. Why do companies do this, make a great product and then load it up with sensitizing ingredients. Nevertheless, thanks for the reviews, I still may try it anyway, hehehehe.

    • I hear ya. I have a friend that is highly sensitive to fragrance and she complains about this all the time. I wish I had an answer for you!
