Besame Cosmetics – Artful Old World Glamour

Besame Cosmetics is a true gem in the cosmetics industry. It’s a small independently owned company that still makes their products by hand! Owner Gabriela Hernandez, is a devotee of the old Hollywood glamour of the 30’s and 40’s and it shows in the beautiful packaging and attention to detail of the  Bésame product line.

Bésame is best known for their classic red lipsticks;  Bésame Red is THE classic shade—a vintage reproduction of the exact shade used by Hollywood starlets of yesteryear. I have a bit of an aversiona certain reluctance when it comes to red lipsticks. Okay– I fess up, I’m scared. I feel a little too conspicuous in a crowd—let’s face it, it takes a whole lotta confidence to wear red lipstick. Fear aside, I keep my Bésame Red at the ready for when I feel like I deserve some attention. Red Velvet is a true red–cool, vibrant, and highly wearable with a satin finish. Not matte, but certainly not glossy and highly, highly pigmented, it is not for the faint of heart.  It is part of Bésame’s Classic Color Lipstick Collection. Owner Gabriela Hernandez says “This is the one that started it all for me. Most describe it as petite, but this 55mm size gold bullet packaging is reminiscent of the decorative cases used during the post-war 1940’s when metal was in big demand for the war. And yes it looks very similar to a bullet. Inspired by several original 1940’s containers from my collection this was the first product I designed when I started Besame.”

Bésame is by no means a one trick pony–their Cashmere Powder Compact has a bit of a cult following with good reason.

  • Silky, finely milled texture
  • Good coverage–a little goes a long way
  • Control oil
  • Lightweight
  • Refillable
  • Gorgeous vintage compact w/red velvet pouch

  • Compact is small
  • Limited shade selection
  • Included sponge is useless

Gorgeous packaging!

Bésame Sweetheart Balm ($18) is a moisturizing balm with a hint of color–I tried Cherry but it also available in Sweet Rose, a shimmery pink. The formula has Vitamins C and E,  aloe leaf extract and shea butter, known for soothing, healing and antiseptic properties. I quite enjoy this balm–it is not thick or sticky in the least–the color is so pretty and again, the packaging beautiful.  Perhaps as important as the ingredients, is what is NOT in it–no parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrance, artificial sweeteners or phthalates.  No doubt it is pricey –albeit it a  pure soothing indulgence.

1930’s Mascara ($18) –Bésame 1930s Mascara is one of the most natural mascaras on the market today, containing only seven ingredients. It contains
natural conditioning oils and food grade colorants. While I do appreciate the natural ingredients, I’m sorry to say I find this mascara inferior. It gives very little volume or definition and there is a strange smell. Honestly, I only tried it once because the smell turned me off so badly. If fragrance doesn’t bother you and you prefer a natural formula, give Bésame 1930’s mascara a try.

My good friend and fellow blogger, Marcia from Beauty Info Zone gifted me these lovely Bésame eyeliners. These dual ended eye liners are smooth and creamy with a velvety texture. The colors are rich and last all day without fading. Rich, plush brown is paired with a darkened plum, denim blue with a olive/sage green (even though it is named emerald–it’s not).  They apply beautifully without skipping and I love the colors!

Overall I find Besame to be a well crafted high quality line.  You certainly can’t beat the opulant old world packaging that is indeed some of the appeal. The lipsticks and cashmere powder are the stars of the line, but don’t overlook some of the other products as well. You can find Besame at and select boutiques.

  1. Hi, nice color of lipstick. I am looking for the natural looking somewhat pale lipstick that is matte and not shiny.

  2. I adore vintage in all its forms and the beauty industry certainly produced some gorgeous works of art. That compact is worth having just as eye candy. Its encouraging to see a company staying close to it’s roots.

  3. The cases and packaging are sure lovely!

  4. Love this line! I wish they would come out with more shades of lipstick. I like Portrait Pink which is a light coolish shade of pink.
