It’s been a hot minute since I’ve bought anything from Clinique so I was skeptical when the salesperson at Ulta Beauty recommended Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Foundation $32. Estee Lauder Doublewear was my Holy Grail until a few years and wrinkles ago. I have to admit seeing a salesperson in a white coat reminds me of when Clinique first launched. The brand concentrated more on acne than anti-aging. Now they are branching out to us over 40 beauties as evidenced by their new anti-aging skincare line.

All that aside, I’ve been searching for a full coverage foundation that is not matte. Seems easy enough but trust me, it’s not! I tried a few drugstore foundations: L’Oreal Infallible 24hr Fresh Wear and Maybelline Dream Urban Cover and I’m not satisfied with either. So, I did what I never do and enlisted the help of a salesperson at Ulta.

Clinique Even Better Refresh Foundation

She said the new Clinique Even Better Refresh foundation is both full coverage and hydrating. Bingo! Made for dry skin, this contains
Hyaluronic acid to plump fine dry lines, potent peptides to help keep skin smooth and salicylic acid to retexturize the skin.

To my surprise, the coverage is just as good as Estee Lauder Doublewear but Even Better Refresh is sooo much lighter. It doesn’t settle into my lines or cling to dry patches. It wears well throughout my day which, if I’m working at the salon, can be 9 hours. The finish is a cross between satin and dewy which is perfect for me. I don’t look greasy OR cakey, just smooth and radiant. I can apply with a brush or a damp sponge with equal success–a seamless finish.

Shade matching is a bit tricky. Estee Lauder owns Clinique but the shades do NOT match. I wear the shade Fresco in Doublewear and I chose CN 52, Neutral (moderately fair, cool-neutral undertones) in Even Better, a shade darker than normal for summer. There are 27 shades available and I highly suggest getting samples to try before you decide on a shade. Even Better doesn’t have SPF like the Original or the Glow versions.

Clinique Even Better Refresh Hydrating and Repairing Foundation has no parabens, no phthalates, no fragrance, is allergy-tested, oil-free, non-streaking, non-acnegenic and won’t clog pores.

My “recipe” for a flawless finish is Paula’s Choice Daily Youth Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid as a primer and SPF 50, then Even Better Refresh foundation. I then set with BECCA Hydra-Mist and Refresh Powder to minimize pores and texture.

Bottom Line: The Clinique Even BetterRefresh Hydrating and Repairing Foundation has been a pleasant surprise! The full coverage and hydrating formula is perfect for us women over 40. Bonus, it’s affordable too!
