Do You Need To Be Using a Serum in Your Skincare Routine?

Best_Skin_Serums_2013

Oils, tonics, serums, moisturizers – oh my! The number of steps in your skincare routine can get overwhelming fast. When looking to streamline your beauty regimen, you may find yourself wondering – do I even need a serum?

Ask any dermatologist and the answer is a resounding YES. These featherweight fast-absorbing liquids are the heavy hitters of the skincare industry and your go-to product to improve the overall look of your complexion.

While moisturizers are composed of larger molecules that sit on the surface of skin, serums have a lipid-soluble base that allows the active ingredients to penetrate deep into skin, depositing nutrients. They are also concentrated and contain the most potent dose of anti-aging ingredients — antioxidants, peptides, and skin brighteners.

The caveat? Skincare should be targeted. There are serums for hydration, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, brightening and much more. Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s or beyond, there is a serum to fit your needs.

Prevention: Ages 18-25

A good oil-free moisturizing serum will keep skin supple. I suggest Reviva Labs Hyaluronic Acid Serum, it does a great job and won’t break a young person’s wallet.

Maintenance: Ages 25-45

You’ll want a serum that addresses skin tone, increases firmness and elasticity and reduces fine lines.  Lancôme DreamTone (read my full review here) is great for diminishing the look of dark spots, imperfections and uneven skin tone. Another great all-around serum is Lancôme’s Génifique. It targets the 10 key signs of youth: texture, resiliency, elasticity, firmness, sagginess, fine lines, wrinkles, radiance, even skin tone, and clarity, with noticeable results in just 7 days.  This is also the time to add an eye serum to your skincare routine if you haven’t already.

Recovery: Age 45+

At this point, you’ll need a serum to help regenerate skin cells, stimulate elastin, reduce wrinkles, tighten skin and brighten the under eye area. The Japanese brand, TATCHA has several serums to address these issues. I have tried both the Deep Brightening Serum (review here) and the Deep Hydration Firming Serum with superior results. Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm is a great general choice for an eye cream. Choose a gel for puffiness and a firming serum like Reviva Labs Firming Eye Serum with DMAE for bags.

  13. I use serums day and night. It’s my favorite type of product.

  14. My skin improved SO much after I started using serums. I didn’t know how much my oily skin would love a concentrated dose of nutrients without the richness of a moisturizer. I started with plain hylauronic acid, but now I’m trying everything – niacinamides, Vitamin C, retinols – I’m a junkie now!

  15. Great post! I;ve been addicted to serums now for awhile. At first I thought it was silly and didn’t need it – but it was love at first try!
