I’m Cuckoo for Coral Lips! 5 New Shades For Summer

Orange lips were all over the fashion runways for spring and summer but most of us, especially us over 40 women find that look too extreme. We can still adapt the look for ourselves by toning down the bright orange and going for coral instead. The beauty of the color coral is that warmer skin can choose a peachy coral and cooler tones can opt for a pinky coral making the shade universally flattering.

It seems 2011 is the year of the lipstick as so very many brands have either re-vamped or introduced new formulas. These are the five coral shades I am loving of the new lipstick formulas.

NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils ($24). NARS took it’s beloved Velvet Matte Lip Pencils and created the new Vevlet Gloss Pencils. In six gorgeous colors and a high gloss finish, these chubby sticks truly are a gloss in a convienient pencil. Released in February they have already become a favorite among bloggers and customers alike. I purchased Happy Days, a peachy pink coral that I just love. Happy Days is soft and super shiny! At first swipe, I was put off by the synthetic, strong plastic smell, however it disappates quickly. The gloss pencil feels very smooth and has great pigmentation. The formula uses Vitamins A & E to make these very hydrating and a joy to wear. As is typical with any gloss, I got about three hours wear. Bummer that these have to be sharpened rather than twisted up.

L’oreal Infallible Le Rouge 10 hour Lipstick ($9) – I didn’t get 10 hours of wear, but a good five hours,  which isn’t bad, especially for a shine finish. The intensity of the color was still there but some of the lipstick had worn off in the middle part of my lips but hey, I ate and drank…a lot.  This lipstick is very pigmented with rich saturated color and glides easily on the lips. You will, however, need to exfoliate your lips in order to provide a smooth surface or you will end up highlighting the lines or dryness in your lips. I would like it better if it was more hydrating. –#421 Charismatic Coral is a striking coral pink with a slight red undertone and the tiniest bit of luster.

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Liberte′ ($32) – If you haven’t heard the buzz about the new Coco Shine from Chanel…well you’ve haven’t been reading this blog. Shame on you! Touted as a cross between a lip gloss and a lipstick, Chanel hit the mark with Rouge Coco Shine. More pigmented than Dior Addict and not drying like MAC Sheen Supreme, Coco Shine lipsticks are incredibly light and sheer; they feel like a balm gliding on. That being said, they are not meant to be saturated with color–but meant to used everyday for an easy, glossy, relaxed look. Liberte′  is a soft peachy coral with a whisper of shimmer. It’s such a classy, refined look I feel a bit regal when wearing it even if it does remind me of a orange cremesicle. It’s the perfect fresh, punch of color for summer! Coco Shine doesn’t stick around long, about 2 hours before having to reapply, but it does leave a slight stain behind which I really like beacuse it wears evenly leaving behind some color.

Tarte Achiote Cheek Tint Lip Luster Duo ($35) – Pick the Fruit of the Lipstick Tree! Tarte has an awesome two-piece QVC spring exclusive–a cream blush and a lipstick, both in the shade Achiote, a pinky bright-ish coral.  The achiote has long been used by American Indians to make body paint, especially for the lips, which is the origin of the plant’s nickname, lipstick tree. I need a lipstick tree in MY backyard!

I’m a big fan of the Tarte LipSurgence Lip Stain formula–with it minty taste, lip plumping properties and glossy finish. I absolutely relish the fact that as the lipstick wears off, a uniform stain of color is left behind. Achiote is stunning– pigment rich, one swipe of the chubby pencil leaves a slightly shimmery pinky coral stain–two coats imparts a drop dead high gloss bright coral lip. You can even see in the picture a bit of the plumping action-yay! Lighter skinned beauties will appreciate the touch of pink in both the blush and lipstick so as not to appear orange and darker beauties can control the application to choose the intensity they prefer. Achiote really brightens up the face and I get so many compliments when I wearing it, I wish Tarte would make it a permanent part of the line.

MAC Viva Glam Cyndi Lipstick and Lipglass ($14.50 each) – I’m cheating because this actually came out in February, but it continues to be my very favorite Viva Glam evah! A beautiful reddish coral, Cyndi is really lovely and very wearable. If you’re scared of reds, this is a great alternative to a full on red. Cyndi is definitely a warm shade so if you are more on the cool side, you might need something more blue based. It is also a lustre formula so it’s smooth and shiny, but not super long lasting. Cyndi has no shimmer or frostiness which I appreciate in a bright color. The color is buildable so that one swipe produces more sheerness, but a few more swipes and you’ve got a killer coral red. Viva Glam Cyndi is $14 and as with all Viva Glam products, 100% of the proceeds go to the MAC AIDS fund. Thank you Cyndi for a wearable red for us scaredy cats!

Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color ($22)- Bobbi’s newest lipstick is rich lip color SPF 12 and Sweet Nectar is an awesome bright coral! These lipsticks are lightweight but color dense–this is rich saturated color. The texture is creamy but a little on the dry side for me so I put a very light swipe of Vitamin E oil stick underneath. Applied with the balm underneath you get a brighter shade but it also accentuates every line and sry spot in your lips. Trust me over 40 beauties, use a balm. Sweet Nectar is an orangy coral but oh so flattering! On warmer skin it pulls orange/coral on cooler skin tones it pulls out more pink. And the best part? It has oh so subtle gold shimmer!

  1. I love Sweet Nectar! I like all of them though. Great review.

  2. Mamavalveeta03 says

I’m an addict (NOT Dior, tho) and so I’ve got the Tarte Achiote duo (LOVE!), and the Bobbi Brown Sweet Nectar (also, LOVE the wear, the light feel, the pigment!), and the NARS Happy Days (so different, but I LOVE the staying power of their formula, the colors–also love New Lover, and the names, of course!). And who cares if the Chanel doesn’t last so long? Don’t we want to try every new thing that comes along, anyway? lol…

  3. Two others… a little more on the gloss side, I suppose:

    Korres Lip Butter in Mango
Tarte Lip Pencil thingy (like above) in … Joy (yeah, I got it because it was my name, but it’s really pretty!)

    • I think I have Joy and I like it too. I love all the Tarte Lip Pencils. You reminded me I have Korres Mango too!

  4. You’re just cuckoo! But in the best way. The Tarte Achiote looks so tempting!

    • So true, Soos. YOu HAVE to get the Tarte Achiote set–both the blush and the lipstick are Fab-U-Lous!

  5. Great post! Love Coral!! A very wearable orange is the new Dior Addict Lipstick in Fire from the Summer 2011 collection that I reviewed. Because it is sheer the orange is toned down and I’m quite smitten with it!! I still need to get my hands on one of those new Bobbi Brown Rich Lipsticks.

  6. I wish I could wear corals as well as you do.
