RealHer Cosmetics aims to empower women one lipstick at a time. Created by Dad Bill Xiang after the birth of his daughter, Yarie, he wants to inspire young women to accept their own beauty and so he decided to create RealHer, a makeup brand that would empower his little girl. No specific features make you more or less than a woman. Boy, can I get behind that philosophy! In addition, 20% of all RealHer gross profits are donated to the AAUW, a non-profit organization that advances equity for women and girls through scholarship programs, leadership, advocacy, education, and research.

Says Mr. Xiang: “After years of business, making money is really not our most urgent priority. I want to do something that can help make a difference; I want to empower women, to inspire women to be themselves, to fight for the equality of all women —- including my little girl. I was disheartened by so many of these brands that show its consumers that they’re not enough: not poreless enough, skinny enough, tall enough, conforming enough. I wanted to give my daughter a way to start her day that makes her feel great.”

To this end, RealHer adds a motivational quote on each of their products. The brand wants to emphasize the importance of starting your day with affirmation. They believe that the positive affirmations on their products are a reminder that everyone is capable of achieving their highest potential in every aspect of their life. With messages like I Am Powerful, I Will Succeed and I’ve Got This, you’re sure to start your day with confidence!

I had the opportunity to try a few products in the RealHer line. The RealHer Play Book I Shadow Palette ($28), Lip Gloss ($21) and Matte Liquid Lipstick ($18).

Let’s start with my ride-or-die makeup drum roll please…..eyeshadow! The RealHer Play Book I palette contains nine neutral eyeshadows in seven shimmery and two matte shades.

  • Fine – shimmery white
  • Fabulous – shimmery beige
  • Fun – shimmery pale gold
  • Strong – matte medium brown
  • Proud – shimmery taupe with rose undertone
  • Courageous – shimmery  rose old
  • Smart – matte black
  • Creative – shimmery taupe with purple undertone
  • Unique – shimmery bronze

The texture of the shadows are nice and creamy, however, some of the shades look very similar on the eyes. For example, Fine, Fabulous and Fun are so close to each other, you can’t tell the difference when they are applied to the eyes. I wish one of them would have been matte as there are only 2 matte shades in the entire palette and I think it needs more transition shades. Though Proud and Creative look different in the pan, I can’t tell a difference on the eye. That is my only complaint with the palette–with only 9 shades to work with, I wish there was more variety in the colors because it gets a bit redundant. That said, it is a pretty shimmery neutral palette.

For this look, I used Fine on the brow bone and inner corner, I took Strong in the crease and topped it with Unique then applied Courageous on the lid. Then I ran Smart over my upper and halfway under the lower lash line and used Courageous to smudge under the lower lash line. To make my pop, I used a flesh colored liner on my waterline. The first time I used this shadow palette, I was not impressed–the shadows faded and I thought they didn’t have good pigment. An eyeshadow primer made the shadows last and made the pigment sing so make sure you use a primer with this palette.

I Am Perfect Matte Liquid Lipstick is a true nude. On my super pale lips, it pulls peach and I love peachy nudes Yay! It is formulated with hyaluronic acid and has a thin and lightweight formula that glides onto the lips. It’s saturated with bold color and has smear-resistant wear. Truthfully I’m not a lover of matte lipstick on me, but this is one I can actually wear without sucking ALL the moisture from my lips. The other issue I have with matte lipsticks is the time it takes to apply them–you need to exfoliate, use a lip liner and then draw it on. Not so with RealHer! I did nothing to prep my lips and the doe foot makes applying easy peasy. True, my lips would look better if I had prepped, but this shows you that you can apply this matte lipstick even if you’re in a hurry!

I Am Awesome is a mauve pink lip gloss that gives shine and is non-sticky. This lip gloss has Vitamins E and Jojoba Seed Oil help keep lips soft and Hyaluronic Acid and Shea Butter keeps your lip moisturized in the healthiest way. I like that it doesn’t feel thick or sticky and has a good amount of shine. These are great on their own or to layer over lipsticks. I do hope they add more shades because right now there is only Red, Mauve and Pink.

Finished look: I’m wearing the eye look from above and I Am Perfect Matte Lipstick with I Am Awesomee gloss on top.

  1. What a great philosophy for building a business. The look you created makes your whole face vibrant.

  2. I love their message. I am all for supporting any company that supports women like this.

  3. Lola Seicento says

I have never heard of this brand before, but i love the positivity! That palette is especially pretty, too!

  4. I got a RealHer palette in a Boxycharm and liked it, but didn’t love it. I think you described it well though and that the reason it wasn’t love was the similarity of colors. If I ever get organized again I’ll find my RealHer lipstick since I did like it and I love their message.

  5. Allison @neversaydiebeauty says

  13. The eyeshadows look pigmented, I am going to check their website

  14. I LOVE the idea behind the brand and the names. I agree that with only two mattes and some of those shimmers looking so similar they probably should have made one of them a matte but I don’t think that’s enough to dissuade me from trying the brand the first chance I get!
