The La Isha′ story is an interesting one. While in a Rainforest Program trip to Costa Rica, founder Sharon Gnatt Epel’s teenage son swam unknowingly in a river filled with highly toxic chemicals. Within  2 hours of exposure blisters had formed on his hands and within 6 hours they had grown so large they hung over the sides of his hands like water balloons. He was sent to a hospital in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica with second degree burns and was treated with petroleum based burn ointment. Sharon insisted he be sent home for follow-up treatment in the states. Most doctors agreed that traditional treatment would leave lots scar tissue and restrict the movement of Sharon’s sons hands for life. She then contacted several physician friends, one of whom was familiar with chemical burns from his 30 service in the Army. He suggested  treating the burns with medical-grade essential oils. Miraculously, one short month later, only a red discoloration remained, outlining the original area of  her son’s horrific injury.  Today, his hands are fully healed. She has documented all this with pictures on the La Ish′a website. That painful and scary episode became the inspiration for what is now La Ishá Natural Skin Care: the only natural anti-aging skin care line.
It tried the delicious smelling Orange Coconut Skin Polish ($50), a sugar based body exfoliant that smooths rough dry skin. I love the texture–the sugar is grainy enough to polish but when it hits water it dissolves. I use this in the shower; I scrub the polish over arms and legs and concentrate on rough patches such as knees and elbows–all the time staying out of the water. Then when my scrubby dubbing is done, I step back into the water and let the water dissolve the rest of the sugar. It leaves behind a moisturizing essential oil that coats my warm wet skin leaving me soft and sweet smelling. Last summer I had a spray on oil Iused after showering–but this skin polish eliminates that extra step which always earns points with me! I like the fact that the scrub is dense and hard and that it doesn’t separate from the oil but I would have liked a spatula to get out it of the jar because it’s too packed in to scrape out with your fingernails.

All the ingredients are fresh, natural and organic, and I love that there are so few of them!
Sucrose (Sugar), Cocos nucifera (Virgin Coconut) Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) oleoresin, Azadirachta indica (Neem) Oil, organic Citrus sinenses (Sweet Orange), organic Punica granatum (Pomegranate).

While I do like La Isha´Orange Coconut Body Polish, I think $50 is quite a lot for a this small jar. However, the company does offer an anti-aging skin care sampler kit of all 7 skincare products for just $15.

  1. Coconut and orange sounds like a delicious combination. I’ve never heard of those two together before.
