L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect Layering-Tones Hair Color: Sponsored Review

2015-02-06 02.30.30 (320x480) (2)   Sponsored I am participating in a Vibrant Influencer network campaign for L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect. I am receiving a fee for posting; however, the opinions expressed in this post are my own. I am in no way affiliated with L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect and do not earn a commission or percent of sales. Can you believe that at *50mumblemumblesomething* years old I have never colored my hair at home? It’s true! My only experience with hair color was the Sun In Disaster of 1977, in which my dark blonde hair turned to orange. Not auburn or copper or ginger, but ORANGE.  Since that I have faithfully left me hair in the capable hands of my stylist. She normally dies the hair in my part and around my face a base brown shade and then adds highlights. This is kind of a complicated process (for me at least) so I was worried how I would replicate it. I was so scared, I discussed it with friends and family before taking the plunge and they all encouraged me to try at-home color, so here goes!

Because I continue to see more and more gray, I was delighted for the opportunity to try L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect Layered-Tone Flattering Color. It is formulated especially for maturing hair with a special technology to 100% cover grays. Color adapts to gray hair differently than pigmented hair and the layered tone technology delivers color full of natural-looking highs and lows. Grays are 100% covered, regrowth is beautifully blended and hair is renewed with volume and shine. Let me tell you beauties, it works! I don’t know when I have been SO pleased with a new product!  Like Diane Keaton says “We can grow old gracefully or gorgeously.  I pick both.” I’m with ya Diane! Because I’ve never colored my hair myself, I enlisted the help of my sister. I’m kind of surprised she agreed because I have helped her in the past and let’s just say the result was NOT optimal. 🙁  Anyway, we read the directions and had a look at what was inside the box.

The kit includes:

  • Developer in squeeze bottle
  • Colorant Créme
  • Restorative Conditioning Treatment
  • Gloves
  • Applicator Brush

2015-02-06 02.33.50 (368x480) The small side of the applicator brush is designed to help with the fine hair at the temples and round the face. The longer side of the brush is designed to help blend the color. We found it easier to use fingers (with gloves on of course) for around the face, but the long side for blending was really helpful. 2015-02-06 02.32.28 (480x320) (2)

First we applied the color in my part and around my face. You can see that the créme is so thick there are no messy drips at all! The recommended time to leave in the color is 25 minutes, I exceeded that by 5 minutes. I admit, I got really nervous when I looked at my part and it was orange but big sis told me it was part of the process. I should have listened to her and left it in longer but I got scared and went on to the next step. Note to self: listen to big sis…well most of the time.

The color I was sent is 8N Medium Natural Blonde. To be truthful, I’m not sure if I should have left the color on longer or gone one shade lighter as it turned out a bit darker than what I’m used to.

2015-02-06 03.00.16 (480x381) (2) Step 2 is to use the rest of the color créme to blend the rest of my head. This is where the comb applicator comes in really handy. When my whole head was done, I left the color on for another 5 minutes and the rinsed it out. The kit comes with a conditioner that is very similar to a cleansing conditioner like Wen. Wow, it made my hair REALLY soft and shiny!

My impressions of L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect Layered-Tone Flattering Color:

  • It was easy-peasy! Although I had help, I could have easily done this myself. No drips or mess whatsoever just amazes me!
  • It covers gray perfectly!
  • The color is multi-dimensional, rich and extremely natural looking
  • The comb was very helpful in blending my original color with the new color
  • The conditioner is fabulous! If left my hair soft and super shiny!!
  • At $8.99 the price can’t be beat

Take a look at the before and after of my gray–it truly is nothing short of a miracle. photovisi-download (4) (480x360)

The color in the second photo looks a bit red only because the sun had gone down so the lighting is muted. Just look at how the gray has disappeared!

2015-02-08 02.02.23 (480x320) Overall Thoughts: Color me (heh, heh get it?) IMPRESSED! I honestly cannot think of a negative thing to say about L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect Layered-Tone Flattering Color.  I can you tell you this, I will never pay for coloring my hair at the salon again! I will still have my stylist do my highlights, but I plan on using L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect for root touch-ups from now on. This hair color is easy to apply, imparts rich subtle tones, plus leaves hair full and shiny and is highly affordable. In fact, it’s so easy to use I want to more hair.  Any volunteers?

HIGHLY recommended!

  1. I just got an invite for this campaign, but they only want blondes and brunettes, fortunately. My red hair that I’ve been coloring for more than 20 years can’t be done at home since my colorist has to first do a malibu to remove excess color, than apply new color, and then apply a bright color rinse…and it costs a fortune. But I must say your hair came out gorgeous! I love the shade you chose: it is so multidimensional.

  2. You did a great job coloring your hair. The closest I’ve come to coloring my own hair is adding a rinse. LOL I think L’oreal makes the Jazzing rinse… that’s all I trust myself with.

  3. Love the color!

  4. I have never done permanent color in my hair, but I’m getting to the point where my greys are really making themselves known! I my check out a box of this, because it looks very natural!

  27. You convinced me! I am going to try and will post back with the results. Thanks

  29. I used to use L’Oreal’s “Caramels” line of color for my medium brown hair but I found that the grays around my face didn’t stay brown for more than a week or 2, even though I also use a “color protect” shampoo & conditioner. I’d mix the color in a bowl and save some separate parts to re-do grays a couple of weeks later. Crazy for a product that claims 6-8 week coverage. I haven’t tried the L’Oreal Age Perfect line, but might. In recent months I’ve switched to Clairol’s Age Defy and am happier with the longevity of the color.

  30. Your results look really nice but my only concern is that I have to put the crème all over for several minutes and that would change the color of my salon highlights as well as the remainder of my hair, however I like the fact that it covers the gray hair as I am really fed up with having my roots done in the salon every 4 weeks. You mentioned that you would be continuing with having your highlights done at the salon, so would you not face the same problem that is my concern?, just wondering as I really am only looking for a good products for my roots only.
    Thanks so muck!

    • I had salon highlights when I colored my hair all over with L’Oreal Age Perfect, I think that may be one reason why all the pretty tones came through. I say go for it!

  33. L’Oreal animal tests. I have stopped using all of their products. There are natural henna products out there that offer several different colors.

  35. Ok, I bought a box of this hair color because I simply cannot afford to pay $130 every couple of months to have my hair done at the salon. I am terrified because I have medium to dark blond hair and years ago when I used boxed hair color, it made my part a bit orange. So, when I see the color of your hair on the right, and it looks Bozo the clown orange, I immediately don’t want to put it on my hair. If the picture on the bottom is the real after picture, that is exactly the color that I am looking for. Just a bit of an enhancement of the color I already have. Words of encouragement?

    • Try it. The pic that looks orange is bad lighting. The pic on the bottom is the exact color that my hair turned out.

  37. I generally use box colors inbetween my salon colors because my hair is dark and just grows so fast and the colors fade. I generally need a touch up around 4 weeks. How long did you find this product kept its depth?

I have also found it easy to use this hair color and had never colored my hair myself. I’ve used L’Oreal Excellence Age Perfect but not the layered tone version which is new to me. I am very interested in checking this out because I don’t care for the look of hair that is all one color.

    Thanks!
