Gwen knows how to rock a bold lip. Luckily, she was game to get down and dirty with us to mix her perfect shades and ideal textures. She’s tried every lip color imaginable and these are her must-haves.

When Urban Decay announced they would be collaborating with Gwen Stefani, I was curious. Would the collection be more Harajuku, or more representative of Gwen’s own personal, iconic style? With each release it was clear, the collection was a true embodiment of this iconic and stylish star.

I’ve always loved the way Gwen pairs more neutral makeup with a big bold lip. Nude lips are nice, but give me dark and vampy. The Urban Decay | Gwen Stefani Lipstick Collection, $18, features 8 new shades, including a first-ever Mega Matte super-intense matte designed to apply in one coat. All eight lipsticks feature Urban Decay’s Pigment Infusion System™ for a super-creamy texture, rich payout and superior color dispersion.

I was able to try out five of the eight shades, including one of the two exclusives:

Plaid ( exclusive) – sheer deep berry

Rock Steady – cream deep wine red
714 – mega matte bright red
Ex-Girlfriend – sheer nude rose with pink shimmer
Firebird – cream deep fuchsia

Plaid absolutely lives up to its name and description, with the exception of being sheer. The creamy formulation makes application easy, and also feels amazing on the lips. It is very comfortable long wearing lipstick. The deep berry color is very flattering, leaves behind a nice stain, and is a great option to a traditional red.

Rock Steady is also a nice bright red. I would say it falls into the more traditional red category. For some reason, on me, it looks pretty similar to Plaid, though not as flattering with my skin tone. It’s also creamy, though not as much as Plaid, but it does has a really nice finish. Thought it doesn’t feel heavy on the lips, it is a bit drying.

714, another red in the collection, features Urban Decay’s first-ever Mega Matte formulation. I’m not a matte lipstick kind of girl. I don’t like the look or the feel, but I was extremely impressed with 714. The formulation feels so light on the lips and isn’t drying at all. Although the shade is described as being bright red, it doesn’t look this way on the lips. I would say it’s deeper in tone, which actually does help to brighten the face.

Ex-Girlfriend is strangely the only nude in the collection. It features a very lightweight formula with more slip than the other shades I tried. Ex-Girlfriend is a very flattering nude. The pink shimmer/glitter within the formulation adds a nice bit of depth to the shade, and also serves as a light reflector.

Firebird is the only fuchsia in the collection. This beautiful bright color looks and feels divine on the lips. The formulation is so creamy, which makes it easy to apply and comfortable to wear. The blue undertone makes Firebird a very flattering and wearable shade. It also has a nice shine and looks more like a traditional lipstick, which is why it ranks at the top for me, along with Plaid.

Overall: The Urban Decay | Gwen Stefani collaboration has made for an interesting lipstick collection. For me, what makes it so unique is the variations of reds. There are plenty to choose from, which means there is a red shade for everyone. If you’re not into red, you might find shopping the collection a little less intriguing, but the fuschia, nude and pink shades of Firebird, Ex-Girlfriend, and Phonecall (the other exclusive shade) are absolutely worth checking out.
