Winter may be waning but my skin is still drier than British humor. So dry that I have developed a mild case of keratosis pilaris, also known as “chicken skin.” KP is a common skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and tiny bumps, usually on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. The bumps generally don’t hurt or itch, but they are annoying and embarrassing. The condition can occur at any age.

Keratosis pilaris results from the buildup of keratin—a hard protein that protects skin from harmful substances and infection. The keratin forms a scaly plug that blocks the opening of the hair follicle. Usually many plugs form, causing patches of rough, bumpy skin. No one knows exactly why keratin builds up, but dry skin tends to worsen the condition.

As we age, our skin loses precious moisture so it is imperative that we use high-performing products that repair and replenish our skin. To aid in this effort, I’ve enlisted a few AmLactin products to my body care routine. AmLactin body care products are perfect for helping manage KP because they contain alpha-hydroxy acids to help loosen and remove dead skin cells. These topical exfoliants also help by moisturizing and softening dry skin.

Here is a look at my nighttime body care routine to treat my KP:

First I take a long, hot (but not TOO hot) shower. When my skin is still damp, I apply AmLactin Cerapeutic Restoring Body Lotion to the backs of my arms and chest. Since I’ve been using this, (about 3 weeks), I no longer need to apply to my upper thighs or the back of my knees where I had KP because it’s gone now! The reason I prefer the Cerapeutic Restoring Body Lotion for my arms and chest is the triple action, patented ULTRAPLEX® formula which gently exfoliates. With regular use, long-lasting, locked-in moisture helps prevent dry skin from returning as is evident on my legs. I can no longer write my name in my ashy skin. Hurray, a product that actually works!

Then I use AmLactin Alpha-Hydroxy Therapy Moisturizing Lotion for the rest of my body. This special formula contains 12% Lactic Acid to gently exfoliate and intensely hydrate. Don’t let the term “acid” scare you. Lactic Acid occurs naturally in the body and is great at keeping dry skin hydrated. The more moisture that can be retained deep within the skin, the softer and smoother your skin feels! This formula also encourages natural skin cell renewal through gentle exfoliation which is exactly what KP sufferers need for smooth skin. All this while I’m sleeping! AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion is fragrance free and non-greasy too. This probably has the lightest texture of the three AmLactin body creams I’ve tried, which also makes it perfect for nighttime! As if that’s not enough, AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion is the #1 moisturizer brand recommended by dermatologists for rough, dry skin.

Note: because AmLactin products contain an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), it may increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunburn. Be sun smart: use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using product and for a week afterward.

For those stubborn areas that need some extra hydration like knees, ankles, and elbows, AmLactin Ultra Hydrating Body Cream is ideal. It’s thicker and a bit more heavy duty than the other creams. If you have extremely dry skin or just need a little extra TLC, choose AmLactin Ultra Hydrating Body Cream. It helps smooth rough, dry, bumpy skin—including dry skin associated with KP.

2016-03-04 23.35.13 (480x480)

I don’t dare to forget to treat my rough, dry Sasquatch feet. AmLactin Foot Cream’s patented ULTRAPLEX® formula gently exfoliates and is clinically proven to intensely hydrate. It helps prevent splits and cracks on my heels while smoothing calluses. I slather this on, put on lightweight socks and wake up to soft feet from heel to toe!

Brush my teeth, put my jammies on, cuddle with my sweet doggie and I wake to super soft, hydrated, bump-free skin!
