National Relaxation Day: 5 At Home Spa Treatments!

Today is National Relaxation Day, a day set aside to slow down, unwind and relax! It’s an important day as we all need a break from the fast paced and often times hectic lifestyles that we live. Our busy schedules can often lead to stress and anxiety.

Each of us needs to make time to relax each day. Start with just 5 minutes a day and work up to longer periods of time. Some people prefer to relax right before bed to help them fall asleep, others relax first thing in the morning to start the day revitalized. When your  stress level is high or your energy is low are ideal times to relax for 15-20 minutes. It’s okay to take this time for yourself everyday. I’ve been using an app called Breathe on my phone to do some quick meditation (5-10 minutes) just before bed and I’m finding it works!

The other thing I try to do at least once a month is have an at-home spa day. Regular spa treatments are fabulous but they can be budget busters and whose got the extra time? Here is my step-by-step at home spa day.

Take a hot bath or shower – add some almond oil, jojoba oil or even a spoonful of coconut oil. You’ll come out of the bath with baby soft skin. If you’re taking a shower, while your skin is still damp apply a shower oil or body butter. My favs: L’Occtane Almond Oil or SkinnyCo Coconut Oil Body Butter.

Apply a Face MASK – Freeze 24-7 Coconut Gel Masks are amazing! Available in Hydrating, Firming or Radiance, these coconut gel masks are very effective and provide that extra boost skin needs. Pamper Your Tresses with a Hair Mask – after a summer of salt, sun and chlorine your hair could use some attention. Two products I use to add much needed moisture are Evo the great hydrator moisture mask: “this product is like a patient friend, gently combing out the knots in your hair with a thousand strokes of a brush while another friend lays petals upon the ground to soften your walk to the morning bus.”

Give Yourself a Pedicure – professional pedicures can be expensive. I quit going to the salon because with so many great products and tools I can do just as good a job at home! If you haven’t picked up an Amopé by now, you NEED to! This is such a great tool for at-home pedis and takes the chore out of using a foot file or pumice stone, not to mention the savings over salon pedis! If you’re like me and like to go barefoot, you may more stubborn dry and calloused feet. I’ve found a really cheap and easy way to eliminate super dry feet: feetreat PEDI Exfoliating Foot Mask! One pack contains a pair of wearable socks that removes calluses and smoothes feet within two weeks. There was NO way I thought these crazy plastic bags would work but they actually did–better than ANY professional pedi I have ever had. While Your Waiting…. for your hair mask, face mask or foot mask, light a scented candle. Aromatherapy is an alternative approach for helping the mind, body, and spirit. The low-light that comes from candles is captured by your sight and sent straight to your brain; this is when your body starts to feel relaxed. Soap & Paper Factory has a new Farmacie Candle Collection, inspired by the Farmacie skincare line. Tip!

Decompress. Place a warm heat wrap around your neck and shoulders for 10 minutes. Close your eyes and relax your face, neck, upper chest, and back muscles. I have one a friend made for me with lavender inside to  help massage away tension an put me in a relaxed mood. 

Great relaxation activities:

  • Read a book
  • Do some stretches
  • Binge watch your favorite TV shows
  • Take a picnic to the park
  • Walk along the beach
  • Take a drive in the country
  • Indulge in a craft or hobby you enjoy
  • Go to the movies
  • Window shop
  • Have lunch or drinks with friends
  • Have a heart-to-heart talk with your partner or bestie
  • Drink chamomile tea
  • Take a hot bubble bath or shower
  • Go to the gym and work off your stress
  • Close your eyes and just rest on your bed for a while with relaxing music or a cooling eye mask
