NYX Cosmetics: New Product Reviews & Swatches

NYX Collection 2

by Blythe A.

Purchased by me

I can’t believe it has only been a year since I discovered one of my favorite drug store makeup brands, NYX. This cruelty free brand, named after the Goddess of the night, is constantly coming out with new products that win rave reviews from its constantly growing fan base.

As a lippie enthusiast, I absolutely adore NYX’s butter glosses. (They even made my picks in our 10 Top Lipsticks for Spring/Summer.) Butter glosses meet all my requirements for what I am looking for in a lip product. They are hydrating, pigmented, apply with ease, are buildable, smell yummy, aren’t too sticky, and have pretty good lasting power.

After LA IMATS, many of my favorite YouTubers were showcasing all the goodies they received at the NYX party, and I knew I had to try out some of the new offerings. The Intense Butter Glosses, High Voltage Lipsticks, V’amped UP! Lip Top Coat, Prismatic Shadows, and Black Eye Shadow Base called my name, begging me to buy, try, and review.

NYX Intense Butter Gloss – $6

 NYX Intense Glosses

Available in 12 shades, these new intense glosses have a similar texture and scent to the original butter glosses, but with more color payoff. In addition to upping the ante on the opaqueness of the gloss, these Intense Butter Glosses also feature a longer, flatter doe foot applicator. I like the new applicator. I think it works well the more intense color of the glosses.

I decided to refrain myself and only choose two glosses to try (though after testing out these two, I want more):

 NYX Intense Butterglosses Swatches

Toasted Marshmallow – a mauve purple

Chocolate Crepe – a deep beige

 NYX Butterglosses Comparison

As you can see, both are very rich in pigment and apply quite nicely. I’ve also included a side-by-side comparison of the Intense Butter Glosses (swatches 2 &3) and original Butter Glosses (swatches 1 & 4) so you can a better idea of the difference. The original glosses are less opaque than the new intense glosses, but I still love them both equally.

NYX High Voltage Lipstick – $6

 NYX High Voltage Lipsticks

The next lip product I had to test out was the new High Voltage Lipsticks. Available in 22 shades, these lipsticks are vibrant in color and super-rich in finish. Unlike the butter glosses, these lipsticks don’t have that sweet, cakey smell, which makes them perfect for anyone that prefers  unscented products.

I also opted to try two of the 22 shades available: (And, yes, I want more)

NYX High Voltage Lipsticks

Twisted (08) – bright violet

Flutter Kiss (05) – soft pink mauve

I absolutely adore these lipsticks. They feel amazing on the lips, apply easily, thanks to their slim design, and feature highly pigmented color payoff. I definitely want more of High Voltage Lipsticks, as I already hinted at above. My only complaint with these is the packaging. While I love the small size, I just wish the caps would stay put. You have to really make sure you securely close it it has a tendency to come off.

NYX Prismatic Shadows – $6

 NYX Prismatic Shadows

I have a few palettes from NYX that I’ve received in subscription boxes or through swaps, and while I like them, they don’t really wow me. Then I tried the Prismatic Shadows, and I was more than wowed. Available in 12 shades, these shadows feature a beautiful metallic finish, with amazing color pay off, and a formula that glides on like silk. Plus, how can you not like an eye shadow package that features a cute metal bow.

As with the lip glosses and lipsticks, I opted to try two Prismatic Shadows: (You guessed it, I want more)

 NYX Prismatic Shadows Swatches

Bedroom Eyes – deep brown metallic

Punk Heart – deep plum with purple shimmer

I absolutely adore both of these shadows. They apply like a dream, work great on their own, or when you want to add a pop of metallic to your look. While Bedroom Eyes is probably a more suitable for work shadow, I think you could absolutely add some Punk Heart to your office look without breaking the dress code.

NYX Eye Shadow Base in Black and V’Amped Up! Lip Top Coat – $6-$7

 Vamped UP and Black Base

The final two products I wanted to take for a test run were the Eye Shadow Base in Black and the V’Amped Up! Lip Top Coat. The shadow base in black is designed to add dimension and drama to your eye look, while increasing color payoff and wear. The V’Amped Up! top coat, infused with shea butter and vitamin E, helps transform lighter lip colors into more vampy shades.

Lipgloss Comparison with VampUp                  Eyeshadows with Black Base Comparison

I found both products to do exactly what they claim to do; intensify your lip and shadow colors. (Left pict: Vamped Up! Top Coat paired with High Voltage Twisted, Right pict: Punk Heart and Bedroom Eyes over Black Base) I did find the shadow base a bit difficult to work with, but only because I have lids that tend to be on the dry side. Can any part of the skin of my face not be dry? Is that too much to ask?

I love having both of these products in my makeup arsenal because they allow me to play around with different looks, or to transform eye shadows and lip colors I already use.

Bottom Line: With their affordable prices, high quality, and wealth of product options, NYX is one of the top drugstore makeup brands available today. I have yet to use a product I don’t like, and for the price, I doubt I’d be disappointed if that happened. If you haven’t tried the above reviewed products from NYX I definitely recommend checking them out at ULTA, CVS, Target, or online at NYXcosmetics.com.

TIP: If you do find a gloss you like, but it seems to have been already opened by some gross person who thinks it okay to “test” it in store and put it back, try ordering it online instead. That way you are guaranteed it has never been used, while still getting the color you like.

I didn’t even realize it at the time, but I guess I did go for a nude and purple toned look. I do love my purple. Glad the swatches can help you out for online ordering in the UK.
