Pet Adoption and Rehoming Your Pet.

With so many natural disasters lately: fires, flooding, mudslides, earthquakes, pets often get left behind when people have to evacuate. Sometimes people have to give up their pet(s) because they don’t have a permanent place to live. Get Your Pet is an online community that connects people who need to rehome their pet with people who want to adopt a pet like theirs. It’s a genius idea!

Get Your Pet is a simple, smart and humane way to keep pets out of shelters, one that also increases shelters’ ability to care for the homeless and abused animals that really need them.

  • Fact: 7.5 million animals enter shelters each year.
  • Fact: One third of them, or 2.5 million, are pets people had to give up.
  • Fact: Shelters euthanize 2.6 million animals each year.

Together, we can spare pets the stress, exposure to illness, and potential of being euthanized in shelters. Imagine if everyone who had to give up a pet found a new home for them through Get Your Pet:

  • 2.5 million pets would stay out of shelters. (Shelters are a necessary last resort for abused animals and strays, but, as anyone who works at a shelter will tell you, they are no place for pets.)
  • Shelters would be able to reallocate the space and money now spent on 2.5 million pets to the remaining strays and abused animals they take in.

I can understand the benefits of rehoming a pet. People who want to adopt have the confidence of knowing that the pets they view online are truly available. This was a problem when I adopted my dog Addy. The shelter was overrun with dogs because they had taken in 500 dogs from a high kill shelter in California. At first, they said she had been adopted but then she really hadn’t and was still available. It was clear things were hectic and confusing. Larger urban shelters often have don’t have space or money to adequately care for the many animals they house. Chicago currently has a wealth of Labrador Retrievers available. Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog in America!

Another great benefit is that Guardians (current pet owners) can safely message with, and meet potential adopters, so they can gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing their pet is going to a good home. I would have loved the chance to speak with Addy’s former owners. I didn’t know anything about her except that she was pretty well trained. The shelter didn’t know her breed only that she is a terrier mix and they didn’t how old she was. With Get Your Pet dogs and cats can go from one good home to another!

After 5 years, Addy and I are happy as clams. She is so friendly that everyone, dogs AND people love her and she is a delight to be around. She is very loving and gives me kisses and lays in my lap for pets. I smile just thinking about her!

Addy the Super Dog!
