Hard Candy Primer & Highlighters

I’ve been a fan of primers and highlighters for quite some time, probably even before they became a huge topic of discussion. I’ve even turned my mom, sister, and friends onto the magic of primer. As my skin has gotten drier and drier, I’m always on the lookout for the perfect primer and highlighter. My poor skin needs a lot of help in the hydration and illumination arena.

I need a primer that delivers extra moisturizing properties and helps my foundation apply smoothly and not patchy. The same goes for my highlighter. I need it to go on smooth, add that “look at me” glow, without accentuating my pores. I was more than a little excited when Hard Candy offered to send me their Sheer Envy Hydrating Primer Mist, $8.00, Illuminate and Strobing Mix-in Drops, $6.86, and Illuminate and Strobing Face Duo Stick, $6.00. Who doesn’t like some good drugstore makeup?

New! Hard Candy Sheer Envy Hydrating Primer Mist, $8.00

Hard Candy Hydrating Primer Mist

If you’ve used primers then you know most of them come in a tube and tend to be silicon based. The great thing about this new primer is that is a silicone free mist.

The lightweight formulation helps hydrate and revitalize skin for a more radiant look. I’m all about radiance and hydration, which my dry skin can lack. In addition to being silicone free, the Sheer Envy Hydrating Primer Mist is also oil and alcohol free. Plus, the primer is infused with Coconut Water and electrolytes, which help to energize and boost hydration for up to 12 hours.

I really enjoyed the results I received from this new primer. My makeup stayed in place for hours and hours, and my skin felt consistently hydrated. The mist always felt cool and refreshing, and the formulation didn’t irritate my sensitive skin. Because it is so lightweight, I did find I needed some extra mists on the extremely dry parts of my face, like my cheeks.  As for fragrance, I can definitely detect the coconut water infusion, but not in an overpowering way. The scent dissipates after about a minute.

Illuminate and Strobing Mix-in Drops, $6.86

Hard Candy Illuminating Drops

I’ve used liquid based illuminating drops before, but never in a white pearl color. Most of the ones I’ve tried previously are gold, pink, or bronze based. Sometimes those are a bit too intense for us pale girls.

The Mix-in Drops from Hard Candy are designed to create a radiant, dewy complexion. You can use them alone or mix in with foundation or moisturizer. I haven’t tried adding the drops into my moisturizer, but I did add them to my foundation and I loved the results. My skin had an instant radiance that seemed to come for within.

The white pearl blends in seamlessly with my foundation and didn’t create any white cast. I also used the drops on their own and liked how they added a nice soft glow where ever I applied them. While these Illuminate and Strobing Mix-in Drops don’t give you the intense highlight that is so popular these days, they are ideal for minimal makeup days or when you are looking to create a subtle all over glow.

My only complaint with this product is the stopper. Mine broke after several uses. I know it’s a drugstore makeup, but I think they could have invested a little more in the stopper, especially since the bottle is made from a solid, heavy glass.

Illuminate and Strobing Face Duo Stick, $6.00

Hard Candy Strobing Highlighting Duo Stick

Of the three Hard Candy products I tried, this was my least favorite. While I really liked the double-ended stick packaging, the actual product effectiveness fell flat. The formulation is extremely creamy, which is usually a great thing. However, in this case, it caused the highlighters to have zero lasting power.

Even when I applied these to my hands for swatching purposes, I noticed how easy it was to blend them into my skin and then completely off of my skin. I would have thought that this creamy formulation would work great on dry skin, but unfortunately, neither the pink nor gold side were a hit. I can only imagine how this would work on oiler skin.

Overall: If you are looking for an affordable primer and illuminator, I highly recommend heading to your nearest Walmart to pick up the New! Hard Candy Sheer Envy Hydrating Primer Mist, $8.00, and Illuminate and Strobing Mix-in Drops, $6.86. They’ll help keep your skin hydrated and glowing all summer long, and even beyond.

  23. Beeb Ashcroft says

Primer is an absolute necessity for my mom. She loves her make-up but since she has aged and developed more imperfections (wrinkles), she found she needed a primer and it makes a huge difference. Thanks for sharing.

  24. I’ve never used a primer before but would like to try one. I’ll have to check this one out when I go shopping at Walmart next week.

  25. This looks like it is a good way to keep your skin both moisturized and pretty.

I went looking for these yesterday and they didn’t have them at my Walmart! I’ll have to head to the one nearest my work this week for them 🙂

  27. It has been ages since I’ve used their products, but I need to get my hands on that primer! A good primer is a beauty must have. – HilLesha

  28. That primer sounds like it’s maybe a dupe for Smashbox’s Primer Water? I tend to use silicone-based ones, but in the summer, I often reach for a one that’s less glide-y and more sticky.

  29. OOO So many goodies! I love Hard Candy!

  30. I’m intrigued with the primer mist since it’s designed to hydrate. I like this whole line actually. I need to try it.

  31. Squeee! Love the packaging for the strobing drops 🙂

  32. Sounds like a pretty amazing product. A must try indeed. Love the results.
