I’ve been using the same brushes for so long that the numbers and/or names have almost all rubbed off. Over the last year, I decided it might be time to update, upgrade, or even replace some of my older brushes. Though I will say, I do find it hard to say goodbye to some of my favorite old friends. (Audible sigh and sad face).

When Mikasa Beauty sent us their Classic Essential Kit, $70.16 ($89.95 CAD), I was looking forward to testing out this new set of brushes. For anyone not familiar with Mikasa Beauty, they are a new company specializing in delivering quality makeup brushes with competitive pricing. Currently, the only product offering on their site is Classic Essential Kit, which features ten brushes.

The Classic Essential 10 Piece Makeup Brush Set

The Classic Essential Kit comes with ten high-end professional brushes, five for the face, and five for the eyes, packaged in a black cylindrical case that snaps shut on either side. The case is great for storing the brushes, or for traveling. Though I will say it is a bit heavy.

As a set, I found the Mikasa brushes to be well made, with soft, yet dense bristles. Each brush features an easy to hold black handle that feels substantial but not overly heavy.

Face Brushes

F100 Powder Brusha soft, luxurious brush with a rounded head perfect for all-over application and blending.

Since I have very dry skin, I don’t tend to use powder on my face, except for blush and the little bit of finishing powder I use to set my concealer. Instead, I typically use a powder brush after I’ve finished my makeup to blend away any harsh lines. I really liked the nice dome shape of this brush. It felt so soft on my skin, and worked well at blending my entire look together.

F110 Angled Blush Brushan angled brush that is perfect for blush application, or to delicately contour the cheekbones.

I can definitely agree with Mikasa’s description of this angled blush brush. It makes applying blush and contouring a breeze. The brush is soft yet dense, and just the right size for applying product to your cheekbones, along your hairline, or under your chin. You could even use it to contour your nose.  My one complaint with this brush is that it shed, constantly. However, the shedding seemed to lessen after I the first time I thoroughly cleaned it.

E220 Concealer Brusha soft, flexible brush, with synthetic bristles, that allows for precise blending and application of creamed based products.

I absolutely loved this concealer brush. The soft, yet dense flexible bristles were easy to work with, and did an amazing job of blending my concealer. The brush is the perfect size for the small areas around of the eyes, or the nose.

F200 Duo Fibre Finishing Brusha multipurpose brush made of a mix of natural and synthetic bristles. It can be used with powder, cream, or liquid products.

This was my favorite brush out of the face brushes. I like any brush that has multiple uses, and can also be used with many different types of products. I loved how it left my highlight looking on point.

F300 Foundation Brusha firm brush made with synthetic bristles to help keep the foundation on your face, not on the brush.

Applying foundation with a brush does take a bit of practice, especially once you get used to use a sponge type application, or your fingers. However, the F300 does provide a nice even application without leaving brush strokes all over your face.

Eye Brushes

E100 Angled Liner Brush a firm, angled brush perfect for creating precise lines across the lash line, and for defining brows.

This brush was actually missing from my kit, so I didn’t have a chance to try it out.

E110 Eyeliner Brusha fine and tapered tip brush, with long and stiff bristles, allowing for the most precise eyeliner application.

I found that this eyeliner brush worked great with both powder and gel liners. It definitely allowed me to get very close to my lash line, and even helped with blending out any harsh lines for a more smokey eye look. I do wish the bristles were a little bit denser, as I didn’t feel like I couldn’t really create that precise, sharp line.

E200 Angled Shadow Brushan angled brush that works extremely well for blending shadows, brow highlighting, and working the inner corners of the eyes.

I have fairly small eyes, so while I found this brush worked great for blending shadows on the outer corner of my eyes, or for highlighting the brow, it was a bit too big for my inner corner. I did notice that if I used it to highlight my brow first, there was less shadow on the brush when it came time to highlight my inner corner, which made it a bit easier to work with.

E210 Small Shadow Brusha small, rounded brush that helps achieve an even, sharp application of colour.

What I liked most about this small shadow brush is that it worked great for smudging out shadows on my lower lash line. It also was the perfect size for shadow application on my small eyes. It kept the shadow exactly in the place where I wanted it.

E300 Blending Brusha tapered medium sized brush, with soft bristles and a rounded top, best used for controlled blending and smudging of eye shadows.

I have been in search of the perfect blending brush for quite sometime, and I think I might have finally found it. This E300 brush is ideal for applying shadow all over the eye, from the lid to the brow bone, as well as for working and blending shadow into the crease, or just for overall blending.

Bottom Line: Regularly Priced at $85.76, but on sale for $70.16, the Mikasa Beauty Classic Essential Kit is a great value. The brushes are extremely well made, and very high quality. The kit would definitely be a great starter set, or the perfect addition to any brush collection.

  2. These look like they are very good quality. I liked that the eyeshadow brushes can work for small eyes – normally eye brushes are better suited for those with large eyes.
