Earlier this year, Vita Liberata released their Self Tanning Night Moisture Mask, $45. Created by Alyson Hogg, a tanning expert, the mask uses HyH20™ Technology to provide intense hydration, overnight rejuvenation, anti-aging benefits, and an intense glow overnight. Besides the glow and other benefits, this sleep mask is also supposed to help you gradually build and maintain a tan.

I might be the only beauty blogger on the planet who has never used sunless tanner in any shape or form, even though I am super pale. In fact, my high school classmates used to reference anyone who was lacking a tan, as “Blythe White.” Back then I used to hate being teased about my lack of tanning ability, but now I embrace my paleness and lather on the sunscreen in hopes of avoiding Lobster City.

As a self tanner newbie, I approached the Vita Liberata Self Tanning Night Moisture Mask with some hesitation. What if this did tan my face? How would I look with a tan? Would my tan face clash with my pale body? Luckily, or unfortunately, no tan ever showed up.

I used the mask for a week, and saw zero results. But let’s go back to the application first. The mask comes out as an off white cream, similar to the color of the packaging. While the texture of mask is fairly light, it’s kind of sticky and feels a bit greasy during application. This feeling was still there when I woke up in the morning. I could feel the mask sitting on my skin, and not in a good way.

Another downside is the smell. At first when you open the cap, the mask smells kind of citrusy. However, once you squeeze it out of the bottle, you are met with a chemically, earthy stench. Thankfully, the smell does dissipate after you rub the mask into your skin, so you don’t smell it on your face all night long.

I also applied the mask to my arm, which looked exactly the same after a week of use.

Although I didn’t like the texture or the scent, I did find that the mask left my skin feeling hydrated and slightly glowing. I really like that the Vita Liberata Self Tanning Night Moisture Mask contains sunflower seed, Tocopherol, and Vitamins A, C & D, which help calm and protect against free radicals, as well as Apple, which softens fine lines and wrinkles.

Bottom Line: At $45 and 2.2 fl oz, I don’t think the Vita Liberata Self Tanning Night Moisture Mask is worth the investment. Although it does hydrate and protect the skin, it doesn’t deliver on its gradual tan promise. Plus, the smell and texture are a bit overwhelming. I’m not sure if you need to use the mask for longer than a week to see any type of tan, but after reading many other reviews online, it doesn’t appear to provide a tan at any point in time.

  1. I heard so many great things about this brand, but never tried anything myself.

  2. Too bad about the scent. I’ve never used a self-tanner especially for my face but it’s good that this one tans very gradually

  3. I found this to be a little TOO gradual. It took me several days to get results at which point it was kind of oompa loompa status.

  4. Oy, self tanner NIGHT mask? I generally stay away from self-tanning anything because I’m so dark and tan already.

  10. Great honest review! Will most likely pass because of the scent

  11. I’ve never tried any self tanning products because I don’t like the way most of them look. Too bad that this was one didn’t give you color. For the price it should be good.

Thanks. I hate having to give a product a negative review, but being honest is important.

  13. I looooove Vita Liberata’s regular tanners, and have tried this but couldn’t really tell if it did anything because I’d already put self tanner on my face haha. I did like the whole mask part of it though, it made my skin feel super hydrated!

  15. I’m surprised this didn’t work since Vita Liberata has such a great reputation.

  17. I’m so not a self tanning girl. I’ve heard good things about the brand, so thats disappointing.

  18. Thank you for the review, it’s a shame that it didn’t live to its claim.
