Sir John x Disney The Lion King Eyeshadow Palette!

Purchased by me

Luminess Cosmetics has a new collaboration with Disney’s Lion King and the famous Makeup Artist to the stars, namely Beyonce, Sir John. The limited edition Lion King Collection includes an eyeshadow palette, sculpting palette, highlighter, matte lipsticks, liquid lipsticks and lip balm. Of course, I chose the Sir John x Disney The Lion King Can’t Wait to be King Eyeshadow Palette $42. Wow, that’s a mouthful!

This gorgeous eyeshadow palette was inspired by the classic Disney movie The Lion King. I have to admit, The Lion King is one of my favorite Disney movies. My family and I saw the live version in London in 1999 and it was glorious! Everything was magnificent–the staging, costumes, music. The Lyceum Theatre is very old and very small and we were lucky enough to have outstanding seats. Having that experience, I can see where the inspiration for the colors of this palette comes from. “Eyes are the quickest connection we have to someone,” Sir John says. “If I can enhance their silhouette to make that connection last a little longer, I’ve done my job.”

Can’t Wait to be Queen has a mix of 12 matte, satin and shimmer shades in bold and neutral shades. The colors were handpicked and curated by Global Makeup Artist Sir John, who is Beyonce’s makeup artist. Did you see the reality show contest American Beauty Star on Lifetime? Sir John was the mentor on that show and watching it I gained immediate respect for this sophisticated, kind and talented man. Having Sir John design the palette has me lusting after it, and him but that’s another story.

Shade Names:
• Mufasa- Warm Copper Brown with Gold Flake, Shimmer
• Zazu- Electric Blue, Shimmer
• The Meadows- Vivid Green with Gold Flake, Shimmer
• Sire- Deep Purple with Blue Flake, Shimmer
• Nala- Champagne gold, Shimmer
• King- Light Warm Brown, Matte
• Pride Rock- True Brown, Matte
• African Clay- Brick Red, Matte
• Safari Khaki- Warm Beige, Matte
• Simba- Warm Gold, Satin
• Wisdom- Soft Coral, Matte
• Landscape- Rose Gold, Satin

All the shades are richly pigmented and performed well with the exception of the electric blue Zazu which was a little patchy–weird for a shimmer. Sire swatches as a true purple but it definitely morphed into a burgundy shade on my eyes. I don’t mind but you should be aware. The rest of the shimmers: Mufasa, The Meadows, Nala and Landscape are beautiful and blend like a dream. Nala is a glittering dirty gold/khaki shade that absolutely glows!

There are a lot of good transition shades that were easy to work with and lasted all day with a primer. African Clay is a lovely brick, Wisdom makes a great day time shade and Pride Rock is such a deep rich brown!

Simba, warm gold and Landscape, soft rose gold are the only satin shades and I love both of them.

Up close mattes and satins

My only complaint about the palette is there are no highlight shades to offset the bold colors. I had to dip into my Anastasia Sultry Palette for my highlight shade. A light beige/champagne would have been wonderful. It’s not a deal-breaker but I do prefer a palette that is ‘one and done’. Know what I mean? Also, I would have appreciated a card with a few suggested looks–I always like those.

Packaging is spectacular. The outer carton is black with only golden Lion eyes. Inside the plastic rose gold palette has a striking image of a lion in the brush with piercing blue eyes. There is a full -size mirror but no brush.

For this look, I used African Clay in the crease, Nala on the lid, and to deepen, Sire in the outer corner. I continued Sire under the lower lash line.

For a more dramatic nighttime look, I used King in the crease, Zazu on the lid and under my lower lash line and Pride Rock on the outer corner. I put black eyeliner on my top lash line and water line.

I’m more than satisfied with Sir John x Disney The Lion King Can’t Wait to be King Eyeshadow Palette even though it would benefit from a few tweaks. The shades are splendid, the packaging striking and the performance outstanding. The palette is currently on sale for $29.40 at both and
