Smashbox Cover Shot Golden Hour Eye Palette!

Purchased by me

Smashbox is eponymous for their photography. The cosmetics company started out as a photo studio photographing movie stars, supermodels and pop stars for countless covers for the most popular magazines and glossy publications.

Their newest creation, Cover Shot Eye Palettes ($29) are a collection of 7 high-impact eye shadow palettes influenced by trends seen at their L.A. photo studio. Each slimline, portable palette has a curated mix of 6 shadows + 2 double-sized base shades that deliver beyond blendable color in velvety, fierce foil finishes you’ll obsess over.

I’d been stalking Sephora looking at the all seven choices but they were always sold out. Finally, I went to the Smashbox site and used my Smashcash to pick up Golden Hour, a mix of creamy, lit-from-within shades. Golden Hour was inspired by the colors of that magical time just before sunset when everything takes on a golden glow. The palette definitely leans warm with just a few cooler colors.

Shades included are:

  • Dope – medium beige matte
  • Hero -soft light beige matte
  • Lights – golden yellow shimmer
  • Hotline -bronze w/ multicolor pearl
  • Turned On -warm pink w/peach undertones
  • Psyched – burgundy shimmer
  • Rock Stars – plum w/ warm pearl shimmer
  • Stare – deep warm brown shimmer

All the shades are super pigmented and easy to blend. I didn’t get any fallout but I always use an eyeshadow primer. I haven’t purchased anything from Smashbox in quite a while and I’m impressed at the quality of these shadows. the color payoff is AMAZING!

The Cover Shot palettes come in a slim compact with a mirror but no brush. The 3D image on the compact changes as you move it kind of like a kaleidoscope–it’s very pretty. I have to admit, though, I was shocked at the size. None of the pictures I’ve seen online have shown the actual size. It’s smaller than my iPhone 7. I reviewed the Pür Cosmetics Trolls palette with 16 substantially larger shadows for the same price so I wouldn’t consider the Smashbox Cover Shot palettes a bargain. That said, I LOVE the shade combination of Golden Hour and am glad I purchased it. I’m reallky enjoying creating different looks with it.

The Smashcash program is pretty cool. You get points for purchases, one for every qualifying purchase along with free shipping and 2 free samples. There are 3 levels and the more you spend on an annual basis, the more perks you get. I used my Smashcash, I only paid $12 for the Golden Hour palette.

There isn’t a dud shade in this palette. Even the two basic matte shades are creamy. I appreciate the extra size of these basic mattes since I usually use them up before the fashion shades in a palette. I’ve had such fun mixing these shades and coming up with looks!

For this smoky look I used Hero on the brow bone, the gorgeous Turned On, a warm pink on the lid, Psyched, the beautiful burgundy shimmer in the crease, Rock Stars, a shimmery purple in the outer V and to line under the lower lash line. I lined the upper lash line with a black gel liner and finished with Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara.

For a lighter daytime look, I applied Dope to the brow bone, the gold shimmer Lights to the lid, the deep brown Stare to the crease, Psyched in the outer V and under the lower lash line and Hotline as my transition shade. Again, I used my favorite drugstore mascara Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara.

Bottom Line: even though the Smashbox Cover Shot palettes are small, Golden Hour packs a big color punch. I haven’t tried any of the other palettes but I have heard they can be hit or miss. I can honestly tell you, you won’t be disappointed with Golden Hour.

Will you be trying any of the Cover Shot palettes?

I love that the colors were inspired by the sunset! They are really beautiful. I think they would like nice with my skin tone. My son just destroyed my last box of eye shadows when he tossed it on the floor so I need more!
