Smashbox Studio Skin Full Coverage Foundation

I seem to be on a constant quest for the perfect full coverage foundation that is not matte or looks like a mask. Seriously, is a naturally radiant finish in a full coverage foundation suitable for mature skin a unicorn? My hopes were high for the new Smashbox Studio Skin Full Coverage Foundation.

Smashbox Studio Skin Full Coverage Foundation $36 promises to “provide comfortable 24-hour coverage that weightlessly glides over skin. It controls oil & shine & has a blurring effect. It’s also waterproof, sweat & humidity-resistant, won’t look cakey or cause acne.”

To their credit, the brand offers 40 shades. None of the three shades I tried worked, but I did guess from the website. I’m sure if you tested in store you would have more luck. 1.1, fair/light with neutral undertone was too ghostly so I mixed it with 2.3, light/medium with warm undertone which made for a decent match. Just beware that the warm undertone shades are very peachy some even looking orangy.

The first time I tried it, I absolutely hated it. It felt thick and emphasized my lines and texture. I would venture to say it even looked cakey. The addition of a primer did help–I used my go-to Benefit PoreFessional but I still felt it wasn’t flattering to my mature skin. Even trying different application methods; Beautyblener, fingers and brush didn’t help.

However, the coverage is great, it covers my brown spots and the redness around my nose without needing to add concealer. I feel Smashbox Studio Skin Full Coverage Foundation is better suited for oily skin types that may need to cover acne or scars. You can see in the picture that it emphasizes the texture on my forehead, nose and chin. If you look REALLY close, you will see the foundation is kind of sitting on top of my skin filling pores but not smoothing them. I don’t feel I can recommend this foundation for dry or mature skin.

On with the quest for a full coverage radiant finish foundation! If you have any recommendations I would love to hear them!
