The Truth About LipSense Liquid Lip Color!

You’ve probably heard by now about LipSense, the premier product from SeneGence®. According to the brand, “LipSense is a patented, amazing departure from conventional lipsticks and lip colors. LipSense is versatile in that you can mix shades to create a number of effects. This unique product is waterproof and does not kiss off, smear off, rub off, or budge off! Does not dry out your lips – it works to restore the moisture content and the color lasts anywhere between 4 and 18 hours.”

I love wearing lipstick and gloss. Even for those no makeup days, I’ll throw on mascara and lipgloss. A great shade of lipstick no only polishes your look but gives you confidence. Plus, it’s the best and easiest way to up your makeup game with little effort and expense. I’ve been waiting eons for someone to develop a truly long lasting lip color! However, I am waaaay late to the LipSense game, mainly because I’m not a big fan of multi-level marketing business type products like Avon, Mary Kay, Scentsy, etc. and I thought it was just a gimmick. Well, the joke is on me because I LOVE this product! Now, that doesn’t mean it’s all flowers and unicorns. Read on.

LipSense lasting abilities are a result of Senegence’s patented super-adhesive lip color formula, a multi-layered lip color process, and sealing “top coats” (glosses). There are TONS of shades available plus a number of topcoat gloss options including matte, rose, pearl, glitter, and diamond finishes.  Because of the 2-3 step layering process, they give you the option to combine different colors and create completely unique shades and combos which is a nice feature.

You can tell right away that the formula contains alcohol because your lips sting upon application. Certainly not unbearable, but you WILL feel a sting, luckily it only lasts for a few seconds. Talking about application, this is not a swipe-‘n-go lipstick–application takes time to get the desired look. SeneGence recommends these steps:

  1. Make sure lips are clean and dry and shake the tube to distribute the product
  2. Apply in three thin coats allowing each layer a few seconds to dry in between.  Swipe the brush from one corner of the lip to the other without rubbing the applicator back and forth. This is REALLY hard for me to do–after all, I’ve been swiping back and forth for 40+ years! However, if you don’t apply properly, the lipstick can get patchy and apply unevenly. HINT: do not rub your lips together after applying a coat or they will stick together! In fact, keep your mouth open while applying all three coats.
  3. Apply the moisturizing gloss om top–THIS is where the magic happens!
  4. Clean up any boo-boos with Ooops! Remover

The LipSense Moisturizing Gloss is a great product! It’s not sticky and the other thing I love about it is that it doesn’t absorb the color of the lipstick like other clear glosses do. You don’t have to use the gloss, but I prefer a glossy lip look and my lips feel too dry without it. I also feel the gloss really enhances the lipstick color and makes the shade come alive. I’d like to try the pearl and rose glosses too.

Colors range from nudes, neutrals, reds, berries, corals and plums. I chose warm shades with yellow or neutral undertones and they are some of the most flattering shades in my collection! Apple Cider is a warm pretty peach and Honey Rose is a beautiful warm reddish pink rose with a slightly frosty finish. I adore both these shades and wear them often. I like how the colors are grouped: by warm and cool and by the color of undertone i.e.: yellow, blue, neutral.

Not only are there gorgeous shades to choose from, but the lasting power is tremendous! I wore Honey Rose for four hours, then ate a lunch at a baked potato bar with a diet Coke (no wonder I can’t lose weight) and the color was still going strong. The gloss was pretty much gone but the color wasn’t! I have found that reapplying the gloss not only makes the lipstick shiny but it also helps to seal in the color so I reapply after about 5 hours. It is also recommended to apply the gloss before a meal to help the color stay through eating and drinking.

LipSenses Ooops! Remover is great for removing your lip color at the end of the day or for mess ups when applying the color. It’s probably not absolutely necessary, but it does a much better job than a makeup wipe. You can also use micellar water but I find the Ooops! remover works best even though one swipe is not enough. I had to use a few coats wiping with a tissue in between. It’s also very portable which is nice.

There is starter set that comes with a LipSense lipstick, glossy top coat and Ooops! Remover for $55. Individual lipsticks are $25. LipSense is vegan and cruelty-free.

Overall, I am impressed with LipSense. I really love that it is truly long wearing, there a great selection of flattering shades and you can control the coverage (one or two swipes for light, 3 for full). The best part though is the wear: it lasts through rubbing, chatting, eating and drinking once it’s initially set, and outlasts every other lipstick (liquid or otherwise) I own! I have my eye on a few other colors: Luv It, Rosewood, Bombshell, Caramel Latte, Plumeria–SO many!

  1. Robin Rue says

My friend sent me one and it was nice, but I don’t normally wear lipstick. I do like that it didn’t smear when I forgot I had it on and wiped my mouth.

  2. Karen Yannacio Morse says

Wow – this looks really interesting to try out! I never heard of this brand but I am also all about (non-sticky) lip glosses and so this would be something i would totally love! And that top gloss does sound pretty magical!

  3. Kristina Pache-Ferency says

I love this product! I just started trying it this year and I have four colors so far! I love how long it stays on and there are so many colors to choose from!

  4. I have heard of LipSense, but I haven’t tried it. I’m usually pretty sceptical when something is promoted as much as LipSense lately, howeverr, after your review I might consider giving it a try. Btw both of these shades look gorgeous!

  5. Allison @neversaydiebeauty says

Gorgeous, gorgeous shades! The metallics are stunning! Wish I could get a lip transplant so I could wear more of these liquid lipsticks.

  6. Janel Berchielli says

I love how lip sense looks on pretty much everybody but for me I didn’t like it. I tried it out for over a month and I feel like it really destroyed my lips, maybe I was just sensitive to the ingredients but I think I’m going to stick with my other favorite lipstick from toofaced.

  7. Allison Lancaster says

I love the color! I haven’t tried this brand yet but have heard great things about them and how long the colors last. I may try this soon!

  8. I think I got scarred for life from lip products that “stay on” magically and don’t wipe off after using one of my friends at a holiday party and it stayed on for two solid days despite showering. It was INTENSE. I do love all the color selections, though, and it looks really pretty on you 🙂

  9. I have not heard of this brand or company, but I’m not big on colors that last a long time (especially if you say it will sting my lips upon applying). I used to have one (not this company) and it was difficult to remove and, as you said, feels dry without the gloss. It does look good on you, so I’m glad you found a product you like.

  10. Aleya Bamdad says

I’m loving both of these colors and love that they’re long lasting. Great tip about the three coats.

  11. I really love LipSense. I even have a Senegence shadow that I like to layer over the LipSense, gives the colors new dimension. Fun line, and you have great colors! I find that I am more open to direct sales companies and products when I meet consultants who are low or no pressure. I’ve been selling Jamberry for more than a year because I was spending so much money on the wraps, purchasing from a consultant who wasn’t salesy or pushy but she was just excited about the products. It rubbed off on me! Glad you gave LipSense a try!!!

  12. I haven’t heard of this lip product but thank you! I love a mix that’s both color and gloss and the amount of shade.

  13. Norah Salazar says

I had some initial hesitation with this but my niece was selling so I decided to get a couple, and you’re right! They definitely stay on like no other.

  14. I really want Pink Champagne and another gloss so I can have one in my purse and one at home. These are so much more comfortable than I expected.

  15. Honey Rose is such a gorgeous shade. I’ve heard amazing things about these!

  16. Jeanine @ sixtimemommy.com says

I hear so much about lip sense but I haven’t given the products a try. I am not much of make up, or a lip wearing type gal but I will give it a try!

  17. They do sound so interesting. I haven’t tried them yet but I think I would.

  18. I’m a big fan of LipSense. I get it from one of my former students. She is always selling me a new shade. I am a big fan of the matte sealer.

  19. I’ve heard so many good things about this, the swatch/application videos make it look practically bulletproof

  20. I heard great things about LipSense and they always look so good in photos! That color is very flattering on you.

  21. Shelley Polarbelle says

I didn’t realize that they were organized according to tones of warm, neutral and cool. That certainly makes decisions a lot easier!

  22. Loving the Apple Cider colour, it looks so flattering on you!! I haven’t heard of LipSense before but it definitely looks like an interesting brand! x

  23. This is my first time hearing of Lipsense but the colours are beautiful. I am especially loving honey rose on you x

  24. The honey rose looks beautiful! I have heard great things about this company, but I have yet to try it out. Maybe I will look more into it here soon

  25. Honey Rose looks smashing on you. I’m intrigued by Lip Sense, as I hear so many raves but I fear that my lips wouldn’t be able to tolerate the formula.

  26. Melissa Chapman says

LipSense is a great product and when you put on lipsticks you don’t want to reapply all day so this works well for that. I love the shades you showed very understated.

  27. TheNewClassy says

These are shades that my daughter would love. She is the makeup guru in our household. I will let her know about this.

  28. TheMummyToolbox says

oo these are pretty colours! I definitely need to update my make-up bag and these would be perfect!

  29. Reesa at Momma Lew says

I need to pick these up! I love the bright colors and the finish!

  30. I hated the stinging sensation when I used lipsense. Even though I loved that it stayed on, I haven’t used it since I first tired it out!

  31. Yasmin Ali says

Love the colors! Definitely need to think about my own collection, and revamping it

  32. The colors are pretty, but stinging when being put on…I’m not sure I am into that. I can never find a lipstick that lasts on me though, so maybe I should try it.

  33. Rachel Catherine says

I’ve heard so many great things about their products and colors. I wonder if the stinging has more to do with dry lips?

  34. CourtneyLynne Storms says

I love the whole concept of lipsence. But to me it has that same texture as the Kylie lip kits have and it’s just so hard to get use to for me lol…

  35. Tabitha Shakespeare says

I’m not a lipstick wearing girl normally but I do love lipsense for events and parties. Love that I don’t have to worry about reapplying!

  36. I’ve heard great things about LipSense. They have a wonderful range of colors, and I love that it stays on all day.

  37. I also have a problem with MLM’s but also recently tried lipsense and really liked it. Definitely a little drying but lasts nicely and love that it doesn’t transfer! Just wish it wasn’t part of an MLM!

  38. A neighbor was selling this so I tried the Apple Cider. Great color for us older women…however, the alcohol and stinging took some getting use to! When I woke up the next morning I still had some on and I had put it on early the day before! If you have chapped or wind/sun burned lips, I would NOT use this until you heal your lips! It would be like pouring alcohol on an open wound! If it were not for those reasons, I would definitely sign up to be a consultant!

  39. Wow this looks great! I haven’t heard of Lipsense before but definitely something I will check out!

  40. I didn’t have a whole lot of luck with a darker shade (I forget the name, it was a deep burgundy, though). It faded out in the middle quite noticeably after I ate. Someone said the lighter shades stay on better but it’s a lot to pay for a lip product that isn’t bomb-proof… and more of an application process than I want to deal with if it isn’t going to stick. However, being a beauty nut, I’d totally try a lighter shade too and see if my opinion changed lol

  41. I have been looking for a great lipstick but I always feel like a clown when I apply too much color. I also tend to shy away from the direct marketing but I might just give Lipsense a try, I’d hate to miss out on such a great product.

  42. Very pretty color. I have seen so many people talking about this lately.

  43. BaldricksPosingPouch says

I don’t see any mention of scent or fragrance (or did I miss that?). I was looking up some info on these and seem to remember they have fragrance pretty high up on the ingredients list, which makes it a pass for me.
Personally a super-long-wearing lipstick ruins the fun for me. I love to change shades throughout the day and reapply. If I need something to stick for a couple hours or more I usually go to my ColourPop mattes.
That said, those colors are really pretty.

  44. These are some great tips. Lipsense is definitely something I’ve been wanting to try!

  45. Vickie K says

I tried this at a boutique and purchased two and absolutely hate them. First, the alcohol is annoying and although it does not burn I do not like it. Second, it is like applying a layer of plastic on your lips and as it begins to break down on me, it taste horrible! No matter how much or less I apply the gloss. As it breaks down after 3 hours it even looks worse and since I am usually at work you cannot just grab a tissue and remove it, I have to rub with some lotion to get it off and then, ahhh, I apply regular product and I feel so much better. I get that it works for some, just not for me. I do not like the feel of the plastic layer of makeup on my lips or anywhere for that matter.
