‘Tis The Season For New Lipstick Launches! Part One

Spring 2011 is shaping up to be the year of the Lipstick. Several brands have launched new formulas; Chanel Rouge Coco Shine, MAC Sheen Supreme, the reformulated Dior Addict lipsticks, Laura Mercier Gel Lip Color, Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color, Givenchy Rouge Automatique–there may be more but these are off the top of my head.

In the interest of providing you with the most current information, I felt the need to do some extensive research on the newest lipstick technology.  And because of my deep committment to my dear readers, mere stock pictures and brand PR drivel simply will NOT do. I felt compelledto purchase a few of the newest lipsticks to bring you the most thorough and comprehensive reviews. That and I needed a few need lippies 🙂

First up, the new Dior Addict Lipstick ($28) – I purchased two of these juicy, high shine lipsticks; #578, DiorKiss and #762 Paris. The new formulation is more a gloss than a standard lipstick and as expected will wear accordingly. These have an almost balm-like texture–very smooth, shiny and hydrating–without the stickiness of a gloss. The packaging is gorgeous–an iridescent tube with the Dior logo and a silver sleeve housing the lipstick. There are an astounding 44 regular shades, plus one exclusive to Saks, one exclusive to Nordstrom, and ten exclusive to Sephora. I was pleasantly surprised at the $28 price tag too!

I was searching for a coral shade (imagine that!) but found these two flattering pink colors instead. #762 Paris is a sheer berry shade with subtle shimmer and a blue undertone. #578  is a bright sheer rose pink with no shimmer. This was a surprise to me because cool shades usually make me look washed out, which leads me to believe this is a universally flattering shade.  With 44 shades available , you’re sure to find one that suits you. Dior Addict lipsticks are very sheer, and therefore you won’t get much wear time without re-applying–I averaged about two hours. If you want a sheer, moisturizing, balm-like texture with an extensive color selection, give Dior Addict lipsticks a look-see at your local counter. Colors in the tube are very different than when applied because of the sheer formula–you may want to test a few shades before purchasing.  My good friend “The Arm” KarlaSugar has incredible swatches of the entire line and a shade translation guide–i.e.: old v.s. new shade names. If you are looking for a richly saturated color, look to Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color instead (review coming soon).

MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick ($14.50)– Another gloss/lipstick hybrid, these are non-sticky, lightweight (although heavier than Dior Addict), super shiny and glide on lips effortlessly. They are more pigmented than Dior Addict and provide good coverage. There are 14 permanent shades–no limited edition for a nice change! Packaging is sleeker than MAC’s previous offerings–another nice departure from the norm.

I chose Ultra Darling, a bright coral pink, and Impressive, a beige with a slight pink undertone. While I love the look of MAC Sheen Supreme, after wearing Ultra Darling for an entire day, my lips were left feeling dry and flaky…not good. Although these look moisturizng, I’m not sure they really are. Midday I added a swipe of Vitamin E stick as a base and at the end of the day, my lips were still dry. My other problem with these lipsticks is the scent–they are supposed to be lightly vanilla scented but smell very plastic-ish to me. The scent does vanish quickly but it still annoys me a bit. I honestly don’t understand why brands insist on adding fragrance to their lipsticks-ugggg. I’m quite disappointed because I really love the slick shiny look and I love the color of Ultra Darling. How the H-E-Double hockey sticks am I suppose to find my Prince Charming with dry flakey lips? Oh yeah, he doesn’t exist 🙁

Prime Beauty Grade: C–this was hard to evaluate because I really like the look and feel at first, but with so many great lipsticks to choose from on the market today, I can’t tolerate dry lips.

  1. Thanks for the “research” Cindy…I’m grateful to you for taking one for the team! I’m loving the look of the Dior lipsticks, and I’m glad to know about the shortfalls of the MAC ones, as I’d have been tempted there as well.

  2. I thank you also for the research I like Paris. and will be buying it Speaking of research have you had a chance to try hope in a tinted moisturizer? I am a fan of Laura Mercier ‘s tinted moisturizer and was curious of your opinion on the matter.

    • I haven’t tried it yet but I’ve been fond of HIAJ moisturizer so I would like to. Laura Mercier is one of my favs! It gives more coverage than most TM’s which I like. You might try Josie Maran Argan Matchmaker fdtn–it’s a nice TM–I did a review of it–just do a search. There are a TON on the market now!

  3. Add my mahalos for the “research” – I was looking at those MAC sheens, but since I have a lot of lip acreage, that would be too much dry territory!

  4. Those Dior Addict lipsticks have yummy colors!

    • I know, right? 44 in the regular line, 10! at Sephora and Saks, Nordstrom & Neiman Marcus exclusives. Now that’s a selection!

  5. Ah, my favorite cosmetic! Thanks for all the great info.

  6. Did you notice a fragrance with the Dior? I thought I read they didn’t have one.
Return the MAC if they made your lips dry. You don’t have money to waste.

    • I didn’t notice any fragrance with the Dior Addict lipsticks–they are very though if you prefer more color or coverage you might want to skip. I decided I am going to return the MAC Sheen Supreme–not worth it.

  7. I really like #762 Paris, thanks for the review. Too bad about the MAC, those colors are really pretty.
