Top 10 Primers!

Primers are an over 40 woman’s secret weapon and you should be using one! Primers create a smooth canvas for application and help bind makeup to the skin for longer wear throughout the day. Just as you would prime a canvas for a beautiful finish on a painting, a face primer creates a smooth canvas for your makeup. I can think of nothing else that makes such a dramatic difference.
There are face primers, eye shadow primers, lip primers and mascara primers. I use them all and as I’ve gotten older, they are no longer optional in my makeup arsenal. I’ve tried eleventy-billion primers and these are the ones I rely on to help me fight the battle of aging.
IT Cosmetics Feel the Moment Anti-Aging Primer Serum ($38) – creates the perfect canvas for foundation and does double-duty as an anti-aging skin serum. This serum is super hydrating and comes in a sanitary pump. One to two pumps is enough for your entire face and neck. Just make sure to let it “set” for a few minutes before applying foundation. Best for: dry, aging skin.
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($52) very expensive but worth it! Virtually every time I use this, I get compliments on my skin–it’s the closest to flawless skin I’ll ever get. Surprising lightweight, it spreads well, really fills in lines and pores does a great job of  “grabbing” foundation. It has an SPF of 15 and I love the satin finish. Best for: oily skin and wrinkles.
Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser ($6.99) – extremely lightweight, glides on well, but doesn’t “grab” foundation like other primers do. Smooths on easily–a great drugstore option. Beware if you are allergic to silicones. Best for: younger skin.
Reviva Labs Makeup Primer ($19.50) – another low cost option, this is the primer I keep going back to. Highly effective. this primer has Co-enzyme Q10 adding antioxidant protection. A little goes a loooong way. I saw a friend at the drug store recently and she commented that my skin looked great and asked if I had a new foundation. Nope, the only difference since the last time I saw her was Reviva makeup primer. ‘Nuff said? Best for: everyone
Mally Poreless Face Defender ($40) – a clear gel/powder, this stuff is rocks! It really does make pores disappear– but be careful and do NOT use too much. On the first attempt I used my fingers to apply and it was a disaster–use the sponge that comes with the compact for the perfect application. I’m convinced this was not created by Mally Roncal, but by Criss Angel because not only does it make pores vanish but it transforms from a gel to a powder. Best for: making pores disappear
Too Faced Lip Insurance Lip Primer ($19) – we over 40 women need a good lip primer to keep lipstick from bleeding or feathering AND to lessen the dry lines on our lips. This primer keeps your glosses and lipsticks from feathering, fading, or transferring even under the most lip-challenging conditions. The vitamin-E-enriched formula keeps lips smooth while unique pigment binders protect lip colors from any pout imperfections. Best for: everyone but especially over 40 gals
Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($20) – this soothing formula evens out the skin tone on your lids and smoothes crepey lines while securing a barrier between the oils of your skin and your makeup, so you never have to worry have fading or creasing. Excellent! Best for: everyone and especially for oily lids
Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion Anti-aging ($24) – this eye shadow primer has some high tech ingredients just for older eyes.  Dermaxyl® helps smooth the appearance of wrinkles; Kalpariane® plumps, firms, and hydrates skin as it improves suppleness and elasticity; and optical blurring pigments create a subtle, soft-focus effect that instantly wakes up tired eyes and minimizes the appearance of redness, crepiness, and other imperfections in 8 weeks.

  1. I do like that It Cosmetics primer but I feel like it has to set on your skin for 10 minutes before you can think about applying foundation.

  2. Ah yes the Hourglass one is really nice, I have that one. It was kind of hard to narrow down actually!

  3. It was so close–I also like the Mally and Hourglass primers! Looks like there are a few I haven’t tried that I will need to add to my shopping list.

  4. Criss Angel makeup!!! Yes, makes all the bad stuff disappear!!!!!

  5. We have a lot in common like Reviva Labs and TFSI but the difference is I can count to 10 and you can only count to 8!! LOL
I didn’t think of the Mally as a primer but I absolutely love it. Great choices.

  6. So silly I didn’t include eye primers. I couldn’t live without TFSI!

  7. Nice list. I’ve never heard of Baby Skin — where have I been?
